Update on where the proposed reboot of Swamp Thing stands

I won’t pretend that I’m very knowledgeable on the subject of “Swamp Thing”. The comics, the movies, or the TV show. It was never a namebrand I had much interest in, even though the cheesy story is quite appealing to a B-movie lover like me. But my interest has been stirred in it ever since the news broke that Joel Silver was eagerly trying to make a new SWAMP THING, although not much has happened on that front…

SWAMP THING creator Len Wein had a chat with Movie Web recently where he gave an update, sort of, on where the movie stands at the moment, and why it’s taking so long to get going.

“There is a rights problem which I don’t understand because I’m not a lawyer… My wife could probably explain it, I can’t. (She is a lawyer). But we desperately want to make a new ‘Swamp Thing’ movie. I’ve written a screenplay. Joel Silver is gung-ho to make it, to do it right… big-budget, CGI, the whole dance.”

I actually desperately want a new SWAMP THING movie as well, for reasons I can’t quite understand. Maybe because I just want to see what a big-budget Joel Silver-produced epic about a swamp thing would look like.

Wein continued, “I know Akiva Goldsman wants to take my script, rewrite that and do something with it. We want to do a ‘Swamp Thing’ movie. Once we figure out the rights problems, we will.”

Earlier in the year, Vincenzo Natali expressed some interest in tackling the property, although there’s no indication that he’ll get a chance to. Hopefully there will be some untangling of the rights and we can get moving on a new SWAMP THING soon.

A lovely scene from Wes Craven’s version of SWAMP THING
