Golden Globe nominees include Dunkirk, Lady Bird, Shape of Water & more!

Awards seasons is in full swing as several notable critic outlets have bestowed their high honors om the likes of many movies, including SHAPE OF WATER, LADY BIRD, THE FLORIDA PROJECT, GET OUT and more. At this point its safe to say there’s no clear frontrunner, but now and through January the big-ticket awards outlets will be putting out their nominations, and earliest among that crowd are the Golden Globes nominations, courtesy of the Hollywood Foreign Press. Now that all the nominees are announced we can take a look at the surprises and snubs!

In the TV category, there are some reliables bets, like GAME OF THRONES and STRANGER THINGS, although some will notice the lack of nominations for the former in the acting categories. New show SMILF also surprised with some nominations for Best Actress in a Comedy and Best Comedy Series. Also a shout-out for MacLaughlin for TWIN PEAKS! As for some other snubs, fan favorite MINDHUNTER was totally shut out, as was VEEP and CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. Other than that the TV section was pretty predictable, with shows BIG LITTLE LIES, THIS IS US, THE HANDMAID'S TALE and MASTER OF NONE all snagging nominations.

Now for movies, there are some big surprises, including ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD for, anything really. The movie made headlines when they recast Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer and reshot in a matter of weeks. Now Plummer secured a surprise nom, as did Scott for directing and Michelle Williams for Best Actress. Left out of director were Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig for GET OUT and LADY BIRD, and the two were heavy favorites going in. Also noticeably absent in all categories was the hit comedy THE BIG SICK, which many (including me) expected to be a heavy hitter here, especially for Holly Hunter in Supporting Actress. Overall, there aren't too many big surprises here, like last year with DEADPOOL, with many of the predicted, major contenders all getting in somewhere.  As it will probably be at the Oscars, SHAPE OF WATER leads the nominees with seven nominations, while THE POST and THREE BILLBOARDS nabbed six, LADY BIRD got four, and DUNKIRK, ALL THE MONEY, GREATEST SHOWMAN and I, TONYA got three.
