Uprising: Travis Knight to direct apocalyptic vampire film for Netflix

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

CEO of the animation studio Laika for well over a decade, Travis Knight directed the Best Animated Feature Oscar nominee Kubo and the Two Strings before making his live-action debut with the very well received Transformers spin-off Bumblebee. Now Knight is moving on to some darker material, as he has signed on to direct the vampire action thriller Uprising for Netflix and Stranger Things producers 21 Laps.

Scripted by Jeremy Slater (Jay Basu, JD Payne, and Patrick McKay wrote earlier drafts), Uprising is based on the Raymond A. Villareal novel A People's History of the Vampire Uprising (pick up a copy at THIS LINK). The story is set

after a global viral outbreak turns people into vampires and follows CIA agent Lauren Webb, who works against the clock to uncover the truth behind a growing uprising that threatens to wipe out humanity.

So a World War Z / I Am Legend sort of concept. I haven't read Villareal's novel, but it sounds like it could have the makings of a cool movie.

Uprising is being produced by 21 Laps' Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen, with Emily Morris overseeing the project for the company.
