Regardless of what you and I thought though, apparently VACANCY is getting a prequel. Considering a sequel wouldn’t make much sense. Now I really liked Frank Whaley’s (above) performance in VACANCY, he really stole the show (and hard to do with a co-star like Kate Beckinsale. (below)) So I’m just hoping he’s back for this one. It won’t make much sense for Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale to return, so all we really have to look for is Frank Whaley and Ethan Embry (who also did a pretty good job with the little screen time he had.) And I wouldn’t mind Antal coming back either. But for now the only news rolling in is that Sony’s new film label Stage 6 Films will be releasing this VACANCY PREQUEL.
The main news from Variety is just that actually, that Sony have released a new label in Stage 6 Films. It’ll be producing the more low budget stuff ($1 million-10 million budget). So far the films planned to be released under Stage 6 Films are:
STARSHIP TROOPERS: MARAUDER, UN-NAMED VACANCY PREQUEL, ART OF WAR 2: INTERVENTION (Wesley Snipes), CENTER STAGE 2, CONSPIRACY (Val Kilmer), DARK COUNTRY (Thomas Jane), THE STONE HOUSE (J.K. Simmons), THE LODGER (Alfred Molina), and FELON (Stephen Dorff)
Senior exec-VP and general manager of Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group, Adrian Alperovich had the following to say about Stage 6 Films:
“Stage 6 will also continue to leverage our vast library of studio films as we have done with ‘Daddy Day Camp’ and the ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ franchise.”
So there you have it. I’m a little surprised the VACANCY PREQUEL isn’t getting a bigger budget to work with, but from what we saw in the first film, I guess it doesn’t need one. Check back for any news on Stage 6 Films or the UN-NAMED VACANCY PREQUEL.
