Today The Hollywood Reporter announced that Viggo ‘I love me some hobbits’ Mortensen and David ‘I love sex and violence’ Cronenberg are joining forces again in the upcoming thriller entitled EASTERN PROMISES. And we all jump for joy!
After the stellar A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE kicked all of our asses last year, this announcement gets me just about as excited as being with two strippers in the champagne room! Written by Steven Knight (who also wrote DIRTY PRETTY THINGS), the story goes something like this: a Russian whore dies during childbirth, and the nurse that was there for the delivery is sucked into the Russian mob underworld. Mortensen, in all his bad self, plays a dude who loves violence and has savage ties with the mob. Or something along those lines.
All I know is that anything directed by Cronenberg is da bomb (except the unfortunate SPIDER fiasco), and everytime I see Mortensen grace the big screen he grows on me- add these two guys together, and I’m totally there! Sure, it’s not really a horror flick, but when has that stopped the Cronenberg lover in all of us? Now do you think they’ll be able to coax Maria Bello back for an encore of that scene on the staircase this time around? We’ll just have to wait and see…
