entitled A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE today from the kind folks over at
FilmForce, and boy does it look sweet.
I know, it’s not horror per se, but it’s Cronenberg damn-it, and that
alone gives this flick some props. Here’s the synopsis:
The thriller tells the story of a small town
restaurant owner, Tom Stall, whose life is turned upside down by a
considerable amount of unwanted media attention after he prevents an
attempted robbery, and in self defense kills his attacker. The ensuing
national television coverage draws the attention of mobsters who believe he
is someone else.
Now ain’t that just about a bitch? You kill some punk in self defense,
only to be mistaken as someone else who just so happens to be wanted by
the mob! The flick stars Viggo ‘I love Hobbits’ Mortensen in the title
role, Ed Harris and William Hurt as the mobsters lookin’ for trouble, and
Maria Bello (ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13) as Mortensen’s wife. She also had
some pretty awesome stuff to say about VIOLENCE, Cronenberg and
Mortensen:
It’s a case of mistaken identity, Viggo and I play a
couple in the Midwest with a really traditional nice life, and Ed
Harris, this mob guy, shows up and things get incredibly violent. The
funniest thing I can say about Viggo is he could be the most down-to-earth,
calmest, sweetest guy.
David Cronenberg is one of my favorite directors ever. His sensibility
is so bizarre and gets to you emotionally. But you meet him and you
think he is going to be this bizarre guy, but he is the most
down-to-earth, sweetest family man you’ve ever met in your life. But I think that is
why he can tell stories that are so bizarre and dark, because he is in
touch with his lightness.
Anything with Cronenberg behind the wheel is bound to be f*cked up and
awesome- and this sounds like it will definitely deliver on both
accounts. Although he didn’t write this one, John Olson (INFESTED) adapted
this flick from the kick ass graphic novel by Wagner and Vince Locke. Everything points to gold for this flick!
