Vin Diesel confirms Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren are back for Fast 9

The ninth outing in the FAST & FURIOUS saga may not feature the return of characters played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, but there will be plenty of new and old faces alike. Of those returning to the fold, we can look forward to seeing two Oscar winners grace the adventure once again, with star Vin Diesel confirming actors Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren will be back to reprise their characters – the villainous Cipher and the matriarch of the Shaw family, Magdalene Shaw, respectfully.

"It’s week three here on set. We got a lot of the original cast here, including Oscar winners like Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren,” Diesel said before teasing “a few new surprises” and butchering John Cena’s name.

Last we saw of cyberterrorist Cipher she had been foiled by the gang after blackmailing Dom (Diesel) into betraying his family and helping her run amok across the world. She dove out of a plane and escaped, leading many to believe she would be back for more. As for Mirren’s Shaw, she made a cameo appearance as the mother of Owen and Deckard Shaw (Luke Evans, Statham) in FATE OF THE FURIOUS, and will also have a role in next month’s HOBBS AND SHAW.

We still don't know much about the story of FAST 9, but chances are Cipher will be taking some sort of revenge against the team after they stopped her dastardly plans and her wild hairdo last time around. Maybe this time she will have gotten a haircut and figured out a plan to stop the Family with Wheels once and for all. That, or maybe like the Shaws she will learn the error of her ways and actually join the team to take on another threat. Then there's Mirren, and though we haven't seen much of her yet I'm glad those behind these movies are fixing that right quick by giving us double dosage in the next year. No matter what, I'm holding out hope that whatever plans Cipher has in store it takes the gang to space because Ferraris in space is the last great frontier for these movies. If AD ASTRA can do it, why not them?

FAST AND FURIOUS 9 is in theaters May 22, 2020.
