Viola Davis leads a heist in first trailer for Steve McQueen’s Widows

Director Steve McQueen has delivered some incredibly powerful, humanist movies over his career, including HUNGER, SHAME and the classic 12 YEARS A SLAVE. With his new movie WIDOWS, he’s still delivering on the introspective drama that showcases the triumph of the human spirit – only this time with more guns and a few explosions. The first trailer for the heist thriller is here and puts stars Viola Davis, Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Erivo front and center, surrounded by an incredible supporting cast including Colin Farrell, Daniel Kaluuya, Brian Tyree Henry, Carrie Coon, Andre Holland, Jacki Weaver, Jon Bernthal, Robert Duvall and the one and only Liam Neeson.

Here is the plot synopsis for the movie as well as some images:

From Academy Award®-winning director Steve McQueen (12 YEARS A SLAVE) and co-writer and bestselling author Gillian Flynn ("Gone Girl") comes a blistering, modern-day thriller set against the backdrop of crime, passion and corruption. WIDOWS is the story of four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands' criminal activities. Set in contemporary Chicago, amid a time of turmoil, tensions build when Veronica (Oscar® winner Viola Davis), Alice (Elizabeth Debicki), Linda (Michelle Rodriguez) and Belle (Cynthia Erivo) take their fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms.

The movie also has an all-star lineup behind the scenes, with GONE GIRL scribe Gillian Flynn writing the script and composer Hans Zimmer conducting the score. This is the director’s first feature-length movie since the Oscar-winning 12 YEARS in 2013, and it looks like an emotional, intense wallop that explores timely themes against the backdrop of a stirring heist flick. The movie THE TOWN comes to mind when I watch this trailer, even if this movie may explore the characters more intimately and have lower-key action scenes. No matter what, with a cast like this, you can't go wrong.

WIDOWS is set for November 16.
