Visiting Metropolis

I saw this story on Variety and it immediately caught my eye. I contemplated whether to do a story on it and landed on yes. It actually sounds like it might be interesting and has some potential.

The negative side is that yeah.. it’s a remake. But what isn’t nowadays? And it’s a remake of a 20s flick I’ve never heard of, so I’m down. Yeah, the 1920s. Although it reminds me a bit of THE ISLAND, I’m intrigued to see what they do with it. I’m sure a lot have heard of it, because apparently it was a groundbreaking movie. I’m talking about METROPOLIS.

Originally a silent sci-fi by Fritz Lang, METROPOLIS is being remade by producers Thomas Schuehly and Mario Kassar. They’re currently looking for a big name director to get behind this one. Schuehly had the following to say:

“With the overwhelming role technology plays in our daily lives, the growing gap between rich and poor, including the gradual elimination of the middle class, the story of ‘METROPOLIS’ is a frightening reflection of our society that takes place in an all too possible not too distant future.”

The plot for METROPOLIS, from IMDB, is: It is the future, and humans are divided into two groups: the thinkers, who make plans (but don’t know how anything works), and the workers, who achieve goals (but don’t have the vision). Completely separate, neither group is complete, but together they make a whole. One man from the “thinkers” dares visit the underground where the workers toil, and is astonished by what he sees…

Like I said, could be something big. We’ll keep you updated.
