Already tapped for a May 4th, 2012 release is the Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer’s joint adaptation of CLOUD ATLAS, the epic sci-fi novel penned by David Mitchell. The project, which tells six stories set in a different time and place that become intricately related to each other, has impressive acting talent attached, including the likes of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Natalie Portman, as well as a rumored James McAvoy and Ian McKellan. According to Aussie publishing house Hachette, Wachowski pal Hugo Weaving is the latest to join the CLOUD ATLAS cast. Here’s the exact statement:
“Actor Hugo Weaving has said he is working on the film adaption of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas with the makers of The Matrix!”
Pretty straight forward, ay? Makes sense, Weaving (above) knows the Wachowski’s well enough, and with the star-studded cast already mentioned, some supremely gifted character actors are likely needed to glue this sucker together. Know what I mean?
With the script adapted by both Wachowskis (Andy and Lana) and Tykwer, CLOUD ATLAS consists of six nested stories that take us from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or watched) by the main character in the next. All stories but the last one get interrupted at some moment, and after the sixth story concludes at the center of the book, the novel “goes back” in time, “closing” each story as the book progresses in terms of pages but regresses in terms of the historical period in which the action takes place. Eventually, readers end where they started, with Adam Ewing in the Pacific Ocean, circa 1850.
