Warner Bros. reportedly developing a prequel to Training Day

Training Day, prequel, Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke

TRAINING DAY was quite the smash upon its release back in 2001, with slick direction by Antoine Fuqua, a hard-hitting script by David Ayer, and powerhouse performances from Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. Plenty of subsequent films attempted to capture that same magic, with varying degrees of success, and it seems that Warner Bros. might be diving back into the world of crooked cops with a TRAINING DAY prequel.

The news comes from Collider, who claim that Warner Bros. have tasked up-and-coming screenwriter Nick Yarborough with penning a script for a TRAINING DAY prequel which will follow a younger version of Alonzo Harris, the character played by Denzel Washington. The project would take place in late April of 1992, just two days before the Rodney King verdict was delivered. With the city already ready to explode, the verdict would be the spark which led to the L.A. riots. As the project is still reportedly in the early stages, there's no word on who might direct or if anyone involved in the first film will take part. Unless they pull some digital de-aging shenanigans, I think it's safe to say that Denzel Washington won't be reprising the role of Alonzo Harris, but Collider does suggest that Denzel's son, John David Washington, might just be a great fit to take over the character, especially as his starring role in Christopher Nolan's TENET will likely launch his career to a new level.

What do you folks think? Would you be down for a prequel to TRAINING DAY?
