Warrior Nun season 3: cancelled Netflix series is gearing up for an epic revival

When shows get cancelled by one network, they often have a chance to find a new home. Sometimes it doesn’t work out (I was surprised The Winchesters wasn’t able to find a new home after being cancelled by The CW), sometimes it does… And apparently Warrior Nun, a live-action series loosely based on Ben Dunn’s manga-style comic book Warrior Nun Areala, is one of the success stories. It was announced back in December that Warrior Nun had been cancelled after two seasons on the Netflix streaming service, but now series creator Simon Barry has revealed that season 3 is going to happen – and he says it’s going to be an epic revival!

Barry shared the news on Twitter, saying, “Today I’m happy to officially report that because of your combined voices, passion and amazing efforts – #WarriorNun will return and is going to be more EPIC than you could imagine. More details to come! SOON! Thank-you!! #SaveWarriorNun #WarriorNunSaved

Just going by that tweet, we can’t even say for sure that Warrior Nun found a new home. Maybe fans were able to convince the Netflix decision-makers to change their mind about this series… But has Netflix ever changed their mind about a cancellation before? We’ll have to wait and see what exactly is going on here.

The first two seasons of Warrior Nun starred Alba Baptista as Ava, a 19-year-old woman who wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life and a divine artifact embedded in her back. She discovers she is now part of an ancient order that has been tasked with fighting demons on Earth, and powerful forces representing both heaven and hell want to find and control her.

Toya Turner played Shotgun Mary, “a woman loyal to the sisterhood more than the Church”; Lorena Andrea was Sister Lilith, “a legacy Nun who is committed to her beliefs, which causes her to overstep and over-reach in her entitlement”; Kristina Tonteri-Young played Young Sister Beatrice, “a powerful Sister Warrior and the team’s resident strategist”; and Olivia Delcan’s character was Sister Camila, whose “special skill is computers”. Also in the cast were Tristan Ulloa as Father Vincent, “the spiritual and strategic leader of the Order of the Cruciform Sword”; Thekla Reuten as Jillian Salvius, “CEO of a tech startup who has challenged the Vatican’s power directly by making a discovery that could make religion obsolete”; and Emilio Sakraya as JC, “the charismatic leader of a group of alluring petty criminals”.

Netflix cancelled Warrior Nun because the viewership wasn’t large enough. As Deadline reported, “Warrior Nun season 2 spent just three weeks in Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 for English-language series, peaking at #5.”
