Angelina Jolie recently wrote and directed a movie titled IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY about the atrocities that took place during the Bosnian War. Let’s be honest: that sentence sounds a little ridiculous. And when the title card comes up in the trailer – “From writer and director Angelina Jolie” – it’s hard not to snicker just a little bit.
But why?
When you stop and think about it, is Angelina Jolie directing a movie any more ridiculous than Ben Affleck directing a movie? Now I can’t speak to the quality of the movie, but the trailer is actually pretty good. It looks like it toes a fine line between really effective and really pretentious (sound like someone you know?) but it’s hard to tell from just this footage.
So without getting too preachy, I guess I’m trying to say, let’s be fair and give this whole “Angelina Jolie, Director” thing a chance. If it’s great, good for her – another thing a rich, successful and beautiful woman is good at. If it sucks, let’s meet back here and have a good, hearty laugh about the whole thing.
