Despite pretty negative reviews from critics
and schmoes
alike, the remake of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET still managed a
pretty decent $32M opening, which probably greenlights a sequel,
at the very least, since this film only cost about $30M and is
already profitable. In case you’ve been living under a rock, the
original ELM STREET film was released in 1984 and followed by 7
sequels. That said, the remake didn’t fare as well as the FRIDAY
THE 13TH remake, which opened
with $40M when it was released back in February of 2009 and it
was recently
announced that there would be no sequel to that crap, so who
knows!!
The rest of the week’s box-office was kinda
boring, but what’s with Paramount releasing IRON MAN 2 in many
countries around the world before the US and Canada? I
don’t mean to sound like an ass, but since most foreign movies
open in their own countries first, doesn’t it make sense to
release American flicks in the USA first? (especially
mothercluckin’ blockbusters as such??) Either way, IRON MAN 2 opened
in 53 countries this past weekend (including the UK, Korea and
Russia) and has already grossed over $100M worldwide.
The week’s only other new release entitled FURRY
VENGEANCE and starring Brendan Fraser as an actor whose career is
apparently pretty dead these days and who needs to take on shitty
roles like this one, in order to keep paying the mortgage on his
big Hollywood home, opened in 5th place with a measly $6.5M. The
two movies to get booted from the top 10 this weekend include THE
LAST SONG ($59M) and ALICE IN WONDERLAND ($330M). It’s to note
that ALICE in currently the highest-grossing
movie of the year (so far), earning about $140M more than the
film in second place, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON ($192M). All that
will change next weekend, of course, as IRON MAN 2 is unleashed
upon North Americans.
As mentioned above, next week sees the release of
only one major release (the BABIES
documentary is also opening, but in limited release), but a
massive one at that, as IRON
MAN 2 finally hits screens in North America. Many experts are
predicting that its opening weekend will establish a new opening
weekend record, which is currently held by THE DARK KNIGHT with
$158M (SPIDER-MAN 3 made $151M and NEW MOON made $142M). The
original IRON MAN movie made $98M in its opening weekend, which
places it in 15th place on the all-time
