Weekend Box Office: Avengers: Endgame Encore beats Resident Evil in week two

Despite a strong showing from Sony’s Resident Evil, zombies were no match for superheroes, with Avengers: Endgame Encore Edition winning the top spot at the domestic box office with $26 million. That’s slightly more than the re-release of Revenge of the Sith made last year and bodes well for the general public’s interest in Avengers: Doomsday, which opens this Christmas. Even still, many — such as our critic — feel like the extra six and a half minutes of footage were unimportant and didn’t merit all the hype of a re-release.

Overseas, Endgame Encore was a monster, making $60 million and giving it an $86 million total for the weekend. Its global gross is now $2.88 BILLION.

Resident Evil passes $100 million domestically

Resident Evil wasn’t far behind with $23.3 million, which is a 61% decline from last week — a heftier drop than we expected. Even still, it became the first Resident Evil ever to pass $100 million at the domestic box office and will certainly outgross director Zach Cregger’s Weapons, which ended its domestic run with $151.5 million.

Internationally, it made about $27 million, a 45% decline. Worldwide, it’s made $196 million, and it’s yet to open in China or Japan.

Heart of the Beast opens stronger than expected

The Brad Pitt survival flick Heart of the Beast also opened stronger than expected, grossing $20 million. While some believe that’s not great for a movie that cost $82 million, it has a strong A-minus CinemaScore, and the thinking is that adult audiences, who don’t normally rush out on opening weekend, will give it some legs at the box office.

It also did excellent business overseas, making $30.1 million, as Pitt’s international star power is still elite.

Primetime narrowly misses $20 million

While yesterday it seemed like we might get the first weekend since 2022 to have the top four movies gross over $20 million apiece, the box office just missed out on hitting that milestone. A24’s Primetime came close to hitting $20 million but just missed out with $19.1 million.

Still, that’s an excellent start for a movie that only cost $16 million, with it opening about $5 million higher than Pattinson’s last movie with the studio, The Drama, which legged out to $48 million domestically and crossed $100 million overseas. If it manages to perform similarly, it will be a big moneymaker for the studio.

Forgotten Island bombs

Sadly, the weekend also saw a huge bomb with DreamWorks’ Forgotten Island, which died at the box office, opening with only $12.8 million despite an A CinemaScore rating. It’s gotten hard for original animated films to attract much of an audience theatrically, but the hope is that family audiences may discover it over time.

Another movie that didn’t perform up to anyone’s expectations is Practical Magic 2, which was in fifth place this weekend with $5.6 million and a middling $59.8 million domestic haul.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day officially passed $950 million domestically, adding another $4.1 million. The Odyssey was pretty close behind it with $3.7 million and a $616.6 million domestic haul. It’s being propped up by those IMAX 70mm screenings, which are still sold out EVERYWHERE.

Coyote vs. Acme continues its strong run

Ketchup’s Coyote vs. Acme was in ninth place with $1.92 million and a very strong $58.3 million haul, while the faith-based Daniel and the Fiery Furnace rounded out the top 10 with $1.5 million. While that sounds low, it’s worth noting that it lost over 200 theaters this weekend and still only fell 54%, so this has been a solid little performer for that crowd.
