and "the cap" continue to lead…
Sorry for the delay posting today’s box-office
figures, folks! I’m Canadian so I just had to watch the
Olympics hockey final game between the USA and CANADA this
afternoon and what a game it was! Congrats to the Americanos for
tying that shit up with less than 1 minute left in the
competition, but kudos to Team Canada, and Sidney Crosby in
particular, for scoring the goal in overtime which gave Canada the
gold medal! (not to mention, Canada now holds the record for most
gold medals at any one winter Olympics…ever!) Had to get
that out of the way since all of Canada is currently knee-deep in
beer, tears and more beer!
As for the box-office, Marty Scorsese’s SHUTTER
ISLAND held on to the top spot for the 2nd week in a row, despite
solid showings from both Kevin Smith’s first endeavor into
"action comedies" with COP OUT finishing in second place
with close to $19M, and the surprising THE CRAZIES scoring about
$17M and landing into the third spot on the list. AVATAR continued
its record-breaking ways in fourth place, with another $14M added
to its total, although it might finally start slowing down next
week as Tim Burton’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND takes over many of the 3D
theaters in which AVATAR has been crushing records over the past
few months.
The film which lost the greatest amount of its
audience from last weekend in the top 10 was THE WOLFMAN, which
has been dropping like a hooker at an Amway convention, since it
opened three weeks ago. The film opened strong with $31M a couple
of weeks ago, but it’s been going downhill since then, and has
only made $57M domestically (it reportedly cost about $150M). The
film that lost the least amount of its audience since last
weekend? AVATAR. Natch.
The two films to get booted from the top 10 this
weekend include EDGE OF DARKNESS ($42M) and FROM PARIS WITH LOVE
($23M). It’s to note that THE F*CKIN’ BLIND SIDE is still hanging
around the top 10 in 11th spot this week, bringing its overall
total to $249M since its release back in November! Imagine
if it wins an Oscar next week…wow. And speaking of which, it’ll
be interesting to see how all films are affected by the Academy
Awards, which are taking place next Sunday, March 7th.
Next week also sees the release of ALICE IN
WONDERLAND, the Tim Burton version, starring Johnny Depp, Anne
Hathaway and a ton of CGI elements. And opening in less than half
the theaters as ALICE, Antoine Fuqua’s BROOKLYN’S FINEST re-teams
the director with his TRAINING DAY co-star Ethan Hawke, along with
Dick Gere, Don Cheadle and Wesley Snipes. Yeah, that wasn’t a
typo…that’s Wesley Snipes in a theatrical release! Nice
to see the dude back, although hopefully he’s chilled out a little
since his ‘douchebag days’ on sets. This week’s question asks
