finally goes away…
James Cameron’s AVATAR was released in
mid-December 2009 and immediately shot to the #1 spot at the
box-office. It remained at the #1 position for 7 weeks straight,
until DEAR JOHN beat it in early February, yet it continued to
stick around the top 10 until this past week, when it was finally
asked to leave theaters so that other movies can have a chance.
I’m kidding about that last part, of course, but I think it’s
worth noting that AVATAR spent a total of 15 weeks in the
top 10, earned over $740M domestically and close to $2.7 billion
worldwide. This week, it fell to 11th place, but I’m pretty sure
we haven’t heard the last of this James Cameron guy. He seems to
know a thing or two about making successful movies.
The week’s big winner was the latest 3D flick to
hit theaters entitled HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON (68% of its
revenues came from 3D screenings). Unlike Tim Burton’s ALICE IN
WONDERLAND though, HOW TO also received a slew of positive reviews
from pretty much anyone who saw it (97%
rating on Rotten Tomatoes). THE BOUNTY HUNTER had almost the
exact opposite rating on Rotten
Tomatoes, with only 8% of critics who saw it, liking it. But
since BOUNTY HUNTER is still making money, I’m not sure audiences
really give as much of a shit about critics as they used to. Or
did they ever?
The week’s other new release, HOT TUB TIME
MACHINE, managed a decent 3rd place opening with about $14M in
receipts. The film only cost about $36M to make, so it appears as
though it will make its money back, at the very least. ALICE IN
WONDERLAND dropped to 2nd place this week, after three weeks at
the #1 spot, and has now made close to $300M domestically (35th
on the all-time list) and a little over $650M worldwide.
It’s to note that next week brings with it yet
another 3D release in CLASH OF THE TITANS, which might be
"fine and good" if we had enough 3D screens to support
all these 3D films, but apparently we don’t (at least not yet).
"There is a limited amount of shelf space. It’s like a
traffic jam at the multiplex for these 3-D movies." says
Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. It’s to
note that 3D films have been #1 at the box-office for 9 of 13
weeks in 2010 so far. I think people like them.
Other than AVATAR, the only other film to drop out
of the top 10 this weekend was REMEMBER ME, starring that dude
with the puffy hair from those TWILIGHT movies. Next sees the
release of the awesome-looking CLASH
OF THE TITANS from director Louis Letterier, as well as the
latest Nicolas Sparks’ novel-to-film release entitled THE
LAST SONG starring Miley Cyrus, which looks suspiciously like
DEAR JOHN, another Sparks-based flick, which opened only a few
weeks ago. And finally, Tyler Perry is back with his latest
entitled WHY
DID I GET MARRIED TOO, which is apparently a sequel to WHY DID
I GET MARRIED (get it?). More importantly, how many dollars do you
