Weekend Box Office Report: August 28-30, 2015

Straight Outta Compton still a crazy moneymaker!

For the third weekend, the biopic of hip-hop group N.W.A. ruled the box office as STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON was on top again with an estimated $13.2 million!

With a domestic total of $134.1 million, the story of Ice Cube and Dr. Dre's earlier days has passed WALK THE LINE's $119.5 million total to become the highest-grossing musician biopic, and also passed 8 MILE's $116.7 million finish to make STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON the biggest hip-hop themed movie.

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON's current domestic total also now makes it the third-biggest R-rated release of the year, behind MAD MAX: FURY ROAD and FIFTY SHADES OF GREY.

Opening in second place was the new faith-based melodrama WAR ROOM with $11 million. The movie comes from director Alex Kendrick, who also made the prayer-powered surprise success FIREPROOF with Kirk Cameron ($33 million domestic on a $500k budget).

Tom Cruise was still in action with another $8.3 million to put MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION in third place. The espionage entry is up to $170 million domestic after five weeks in theaters.

In fourth was the new action-thriller NO ESCAPE with $8.2 million (and $10.3 million total since its Wednesday opening). The R-rated release features Owen Wilson, Lake Bell and Pierce Brosnan caught up in an international incident, but critics weren't thrilled (41% on Rotten Tomatoes).

SINISTER 2 was in fifth place with $4.6 million, a drop of 56% from its opening last weekend. Guy Ritchie's spy movie THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. was behind it in sixth with $4.4 million for a $34.1 million domestic total after three weekends (on a reported $80 million cost).

The second adaptation of assassin videogame HITMAN: AGENT 47 was in seventh with $3.8 million, down 54% from last week's opening for the R-rated action movie. Joel Edgerton's dark thriller THE GIFT followed in eighth with $3.1 million for a $35.9 million domestic total after a month in theaters.

In ninth, JURASSIC WORLD stomped back onto the chart with $3.1 million after a one-week return to IMAX screens. The unstoppable monstrosity is now up to $643 million domestic (not far from TITANIC's staggering $658 million) and $1.63 billion worldwide. Marvel's ANT-MAN held onto tenth before it shrinks into the quantum realm.

Outside the chart, we saw the loss of the Jesse Eisenberg/Kristen Stewart action-comedy AMERICAN ULTRA after a single weekend in the Top 10. FANTASTIC FOUR also departed along with MINIONS, which crossed $1 billion worldwide this week.

The new Zac Efron DJ drama WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS dropped the bass but nobody was around to hear it — despite a wide release on over 2300 screens, it only collected $1.8 million. And the Chris Pine/Margot Robbie/Chiwetel Ejiofor post-apocalyptic drama Z FOR ZACHARIAH opened on 29 screens but only took in $58k total (it's also out on VOD).

Meanwhile, TERMINATOR GENISYS is getting a second wind thanks to its release in China, where it's gathered $84 million in a week to put it over $400 million worldwide.

Next week starts off September with Robert Redford/Nick Nolte/Emma Thompson comedy A WALK IN THE WOODS (on Wednesday), Ed Skrein replaces Jason Statham behind the wheel in THE TRANSPORTER REFEULED, and Chris Evans directs himself and Alice Eve in the romance BEFORE WE GO.
