Weekend Box Office Report: January 25-27, 2019

Glass stays sharp in first!

The realistic superhumans of GLASS remained on top at the box office this weekend with an estimated $19 million!

GLASS was more than half empty in its second weekend, losing 53% of business from its opening. Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan's sequel to UNBREAKABLE and SPLIT has a ten-day domestic total of $73.5 million, passing the totals for his THE VISIT ($65 million) and THE HAPPENING ($64 million).

Shyamalan's PG-13 trilogy-ender with Samuel L. JacksonJames McAvoy and Bruce Willis has also risen to a worldwide total of $162.6 million, on a reported cost of $20 million.

Locked in second place was the PG-13 Kevin Hart/Bryan Cranston drama THE UPSIDE with $12.2 million, rolling to a domestic total of $63.1 million on its third weekend. The $37 million remake of French film THE INTOUCHABLES has a worldwide total of $69.2 million.

Treading water in third place was AQUAMAN with $7.3 million as the DC Comics superhero has hooked $316.5 million domestic after six weekends on the top half of the chart.

In addition, director James Wan's PG-13 ocean adventure has made it to a worldwide total of $1.09 billion, surging past THE DARK KNIGHT RISES to become the highest-grossing adaptation of any DC Comics character.

Opening in fourth place was the new family fantasy THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING with $7.2 million.

The PG-rated twist on the legend of King Arthur, with Patrick Stewart and Rebecca Ferguson joining a cast of young modern knights, cost a reported $59 million.

Critics seemed delighted to sit at the Round Table for the second directing effort from Joe Cornish (ATTACK THE BLOCK), giving the Excalibur update an average of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sticking in fifth place was the animated SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE with $6.1 million. After seven weekends, the gang of multi-dimensional Marvel heroes has crawled to a total of $169 million domestic and $338.1 million worldwide, on a reported cost of $90 million.

Capitalizing on awards attention, the PG-13 road trip drama GREEN BOOK plowed back onto the list in sixth place with $5.4 million. Director Peter Farrelly's fact-based journey with Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali has traveled to $49 million domestic and and $59.3 million worldwide on a $23 million reported cost.

A DOG'S WAY HOME heeled in seventh place with $5.2 million, bringing the PG-rated family feature to a domestic total of $30.8 million on its third weekend. The $18 million hound pilgrimage from DOLPHIN TALE director Charles Martin Smith has a worldwide total of $41.3 million.

In eighth place was the new nautical thriller SERENITY with an opening weekend of $4.8 million.

Directed by Steven Knight (who previously made the Tom Hardy driving drama LOCKE), the R-rated drama with Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jason Clarke cost a reported $25 million.

Critics weren't getting on board for the maritime mystery, giving the movie a 22% average on Rotten Tomatoes. You can drift on over to the JoBlo review HERE.

The PG-13 thriller ESCAPE ROOM was in ninth place with $4.2 million. The $9 million horror movie now has a domestic total of $49.7 million and a worldwide total of $76.4 million.

Closing out the list was DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY with $3.6 million, getting battered down by 63% from last weekend's take. The latest chapter in the long-running anime series has a 12-day domestic total of $28.9 million and a worldwide total approaching $100 million (on a reported cost of  $8.5 million).

Outside the chart, Disney's MARY POPPINS RETURNS fluttered away and the TRANSFORMERS prequel BUMBLEBEE drove out of sight along with the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic ON THE BASIS OF SEX. Although it veered out of the Top 10 last weekend, Clint Eastwood's R-rated crime drama THE MULE has ultimately plodded past $100 million domestic.

Next weekend offers director Catherine Hardwicke's remake of the Mexican thriller MISS BALA, while limited releases include the chilly Mads Mikkelsen drama ARCTIC.
