Weekend Box Office Report: October 30-November 1, 2015

The Martian still survives at #1!

Matt Damon's stranded astronaut continues to persevere, keeping THE MARTIAN on top at the box office with an estimated $11.4 million!

Now approaching $200 million domestic and passing $425 million worldwide, Ridley Scott's red planet thriller led the pack on a slow Halloween weekend as GOOSEBUMPS and Steven Spielberg's BRIDGE OF SPIES retained their second and third place positions from last week.

Adam Sandler's HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 benefitted from the spooky spirit, jumping up a spot to fourth with $5.8 million as the animated monster mash crossed $150 million domestic.

Opening behind it in fifth was the new Bradley Cooper chef comedy-drama BURNT (previously titled ADAM JONES) with $5 million. It's the second miss for the actor this year after Cameron Crowe's ALOHA started with $9.6 million in May, but he's still got AMERICAN SNIPER's $547 million worldwide finish as a feather in his cap.

Vin Diesel's action-fantasy THE LAST WITCH HUNTER moved to sixth with $4.7 million, a drop of 56% from its debut last week. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE GHOST DIMENSION placed seventh with $3.4 million, down 57% from its opening (the $5 million final entry in the series has made over $50 million worldwide). It's also the only straight horror offering in the Top 10 — movie fans looking for hardcore frights for Halloween may have simply sought on-demand or streaming options.

Opening in eighth was OUR BRAND IS CRISIS with $3.4 million. The R-rated comedy-drama from director David Gordon Green marks the lowest opening ever for star Sandra Bullock, just two years after her double-whammy success of THE HEAT and GRAVITY. Perhaps audiences are already too exhausted with the country's political game for the movie's subject matter, and the 32% Rotten Tomatoes average from critics also probably didn't help.

Guillermo del Toro's R-rated Gothic tale CRIMSON PEAK was in ninth with $3.1 million, followed by STEVE JOBS at the bottom of the list. Danny Boyle and Aaron Sorkin's look at the Apple co-founder doesn't seem to be attracting word-of-mouth business, dropping 63% on its second weekend in wide release.

Outside the chart, THE INTERN and SICARIO slipped out of sight, and the new horror-comedy SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE lurched onto 1500 screens and collected $1.7 million (it also hits VOD in just a couple of weeks). Last week's DOA releases ROCK THE KASBAH and JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS fared even worse on their second weekends, dropping 76% and 78% respectively from their already-meager openings.

Next weekend has Daniel Craig's latest 007 mission SPECTRE (breaking box office records in its UK release this week with $63 million there already), along with computer-animated Charlie Brown and Snoopy in THE PEANUTS MOVIE. Limited releases include the Bryan Cranston blacklist drama TRUMBO and the church scandal SPOTLIGHT.
