Weekend Box Office Report: September 4-6, 2015

War Room fights to the top!

Religion beat rappers this Labor Day weekend as WAR ROOM stole the top spot from STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON with an estimated $9.3 million!

The faith-based melodrama, apparently about prayer-power overcoming domestic abuse, has a 10-day domestic total of $24.6 million (on a reported $3 million cost).

But STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON wasn't far behind in second place with another $8.8 million. The R-rated biopic of N.W.A. has collected $147.7 million as of its fourth weekend in theaters.

Opening in third in a surprisingly strong performance was the comedy-drama A WALK IN THE WOODS with $8.4 million (and $10.4 million total since its Wednesday debut). The Robert Redford/Nick Nolte/Emma Thompson hiking adventure didn't climb to any great heights with critics (47% on Rotten Tomatoes), while audiences gave it a 'B' CinemaScore.

The globetrotting, plane-gripping action of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION was in fourth with $7.1 million. The fifth entry in Tom Cruise's spy franchise reached $180.3 million domestic after six weeks on screens as it also passed $500 million worldwide (and hasn't opened in China yet).

Skidding into fifth place was the new action reboot THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED with $7.1 million. The PG-13 Luc Besson production swapped in Ed Skrein for Jason Statham as the fast-driving courier but sputtered with critics (18% on Rotten Tomatoes) and crowds ('B-' CinemaScore).

Dropping to sixth was the Owen Wilson/Lake Bell/Pierce Brosnan action movie NO ESCAPE with $5.4 million (down only 32% from last week's opening), followed by Guy Ritchie's THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. with $3.4 million.

Opening in eighth was the Spanish-language animated movie UN GALLO CON MUCHOS HUEVOS with $3.4 million. The PG-13 Mexican production (translated as A ROOSTER WITH MANY EGGS) was released on just 395 screens for the best per-screen average in the Top 10.

SINISTER 2 was in ninth with $3.3 million, while Pixar's INSIDE OUT was pushed back into wide release for the weekend and popped back up on the list in tenth.

Outside the chart, Marvel's ANT-MAN shrunk out of sight along with JURASSIC WORLD, THE GIFT and HITMAN: AGENT 47. Meanwhile, TERMINATOR GENISYS is now up to a global total $435 million thanks to its potent performance in China, passing the $433 million finish of TERMINATOR 3 as it becomes Arnold Schwarzenegger's second-biggest worldwide total behind TERMINATOR 2's $519 million back in 1991.

Next weekend has filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan returning to theaters with the horror movie THE VISIT, while Michael Ealy and Sanaa Lathan star in the thriller THE PERFECT GUY, and Kate Bosworth and Hayden Christensen spend 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN.
