What could have been: A make-up test featuring Frodo under the effects of the One Ring

There was at one point going to be a scene in THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS portraying Frodo (Elijah Wood) under the effects of the One Ring. The scene was a vision had by Faramir that would have shown Frodo devolving into a Gollum-like creature after having possessed the ring for too long. The scene is discussed briefly in the special features included with the expanded edition of THE TWO TOWERS.

Comic Book Movie posted an anonymous behind the scenes image that shows a clearer look at Elijah Wood with the make-up on. The effect is quite disturbing. Peter Jackson had to make some concessions and he probably didn’t want to do the scene if it was not absolutely perfect.

It is always interesting to see what could have been, especially from projects as deeply documented as THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Peter Jackson always does a great job of chronicling the entire journey of his films to the big screen.

With THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY crossing the $100 million mark in box office yesterday, it will be interesting to see how much more will be added when those films hit Blu-ray and where Jackson will lend his talents next.
