OUR PICKS FOR February 25th – March 3rd
Wanna watch something….about paranoia from the director of ARLINGTON RD?
THE ENEMY WITHIN (Premieres February 25th on NBC) – There are so many formulaic network series that sometimes you may not be able to keep them straight. The latest NBC spy/conspiracy drama stars Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter as a woman who turns traitor but only under duress. It seems like a flimsy premise to base an entire series on but I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little curious as to what the mystery of this show actually is.
Wanna watch something….incredibly safe and formulaic?
WHISKEY CAVALIER (Premieres February 27th on ABC) – The first episode of ABC's light spy rom-com aired after the Oscars last night but begins it's first season in earnest on Wednesday. Lauren Cohan left The Walking Dead to co-star in this show that is exactly like everything else on network TV these days. Will you be bored? Probably not. Will you enjoy it? Potentially. Can you do your laundry and play Candy Crush while it airs in the background and not miss what is going on in the story? Absolutely.
Wanna watch something….the best sitcom airing right now?
BETTER THINGS (Premieres February 28th on FX) – Pamela Adlon is best known as the voice of Bobby from King of the Hill, but her breakout supporting turn on Louis C.K.'s self-titled sitcom led to her getting her own series which has eclipsed the fallen comedian's now cancelled show. Playing a character somewhat similar to herself, Better Things stretched Adlon's acting abilities while also embracing the surreal and heartfelt moments that made Louie such a great show. So, enjoy sex humor and awkward comedy without the social stigma.
Wanna watch something….from director Chiwetel Ejiofor?
THE BOY WHO HARNESSED THE WIND (Premieres March 1st on Netflix) – The brilliant actor turns his talents behind the scenes to helm this story that got some decent reviews out of festivals last year. Ejiofor also stars in this drama based on the memoir of a Malawi boy who helps his village build a wind turbine after reading about it in a library book. This reminds me a lot of the Jake Gyllenhaal film OCTOBER SKY which is good company to be in.
Wanna watch something….with Kate Beckinsale trying to solve a mystery?
THE WIDOW (Airs March 1st on Amazon Prime) – If you notice, most series that take place in Africa these days have to do with political turmoil. While many countries on the continent are embroiled in political upheaval, it never seems to be anything but a warzone in Africa. This British/Amazon co-production sends Kate Beckinsale in search of her missing and presumed dead husband only to find that there may be a vast conspiracy going on. If you really must dive into this show, rest assured that it is a limited series so if you get bored early you don't have too many episodes to slog through.
Wanna watch something….a very controversial documentary about Michael Jackson?
LEAVING NEVERLAND (Premieres March 3rd on HBO) – Sundance produced a lot of buzz, but this long documentary that seems to shed new light on accusations that Michael Jackon sexually abused children garnered some of the most. Divisive amongst fans, critics lauded this film which Jackson's family is trying to stop from airing. Part of me wants to see what the big deal is about, but the rest of me is afraid I will not be able to unsee it. HBO has a great track record with airing documentaries of high caliber, so I may give this a shot.
Wanna watch something….way better than it should have been?
GOOD GIRLS (Premieres March 3rd on NBC) – If you were like me, you expected this to be another one and done network sitcom. But, the talented Retta and Christina Hendricks ended up making this show about wives standing up for themselves to defend their families by robbing banks ended up being a great balance of humor and drama. I am not sure if the series can sustain that same narrative, but from the looks of the trailers for season two, it seems to be evolving along with the characters.
Wanna watch something….if you want to be scared of Spring?
INTO THE DARK: TREEHOUSE (Premieres March 1st on Hulu) – The Blumhouse holiday-themed anthology continues with this entry starring Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) about a vacation from hell. While I cannot tell if the "holiday" that inspired this episode is St. Patrick's Day or the first day of Spring or even Spring Break, this looks heavily inspired by the classic THE WICKER MAN and could be the best entry in this uneven series to date.
