What will you be watching this weekend? (July 6)

Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday, we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.

So what’s on your movie agenda this weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…

IN THEATERS…

This weekend is full of superhero reboots, pop singers and drug cartel carnage … which means there should be a little something for everyone. Tobey WhoGuire? I cheated on you Schmoes a bit and caught THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN earlier this week and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker/Spider totally made this quick reboot worth checking out and for the record Emma Stone looks pretty great as a blonde. I’m not saying it’s the best Spidey yet, but I’m not saying it isn’t either. Remember that Justin Bieber concert bio-pic from a year or so ago? Good, niether do I … but it must have made serious bank because on July 4th KATY PERRY: PART OF ME exploded into theaters and I can’t help but wonder what she looks like in 3DD (the second “D” was deliberate). The movie that really has me excited though is Oliver Stone’s SAVAGES, a hard-R kidnapping flick infused with drugs, guns, love triangles and an ensemble cast that would make Tarantino drool. Say whatever you want about Stone’s movies but he never has been one to shy away from brutal violence when necessary but does he get it right with this flick? If you haven’t already checked out Chris Bumbray’s review of SAVAGES do so right over HERE.

ON TELEVISION…

It’s looking to be a lazy weekend in front of the tube but there are a few things to keep an eye out for in your channel surfing. What happens when a family of rednecks strike it rich with their duck call company? They make a ridiculous reality show and call it DUCK DYNASTY. Episode topics range from catching frogs at your local golf course for dinner to showing up to career day at the school and scaring kids with ‘Nam war stories. If that sounds like a good time (it is) A&E is having a DUCK DYNASTY marathon starting tonight, put me down for a couple of hours! I’m still hooked on HBO’s THE NEWSROOM and I think it is safe to say I’ll be tuning in every Sunday to see what Aaron Sorkin and Co. cook up, is anyone else getting into this show too? On the sports front it looks to be a wheel-centric weekend with NASCAR at Daytona Beach on TNT and TOUR DE FRANCE chugging along on NBC. While neither are really my bag I like to watch them for the crashes, does that make me a bad person? You totally do it too, don’t judge!

ON DVD & BLU-RAY…

This week see’s a couple of awesome surprises on the homefront. THE HUNTER, which seems to have slipped under my radar entirely, is coming straight to disc but don’t write it off just yet as it stars Willem Dafoe as a mercenary hired to track down the last Tasmanian tiger but locals, including Sam Niell, might the more dangerous quarry. Also out this week is GOD BLESS AMERICA, a subversive dark comedy with a premise I think we may have all fantasized about; a hitman and girl go on a killing spree to rid America of the dumbest and most annoying celebrities. But I think this weeks winner for coolest cover art  goes to 1968’s BARBARELLA. The fun Jane Fonda starring sci-fi camp classic is making it’s Blu-ray debut and if that retrotastic artwork isn’t enough to get you to pick up a copy maybe seeing this titillating opening credit sequence in glorious hi-def will be.
