What will you be watching this weekend? Moonrise Kingdom, Dexter, Sinister, Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead …

Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.

So what’s on your movie agenda this weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…

IN THEATERS…

Last week we were spoilt for choice at the theater but unless you’re like me and playing some catch up it’s not looking like there’s a whole lot to look forward to this weekend.

I have never handled horror movies well, so I don’t usually go out of my way to see them in a theater unless it’s some kind of special circumstance or really, really good word-of-mouth. It would appear SINISTER will fulfill both of those prerequisites this weekend. I always try to find a movie in a theater that will freak me out around Halloween and so far I’ve only heard solid things about this Ethan Hawke starring horror-thriller. If you’re like me and haven’t seen SINISTER yet be sure to check out the JoBlo official review and if you hear a little girl screaming try not to be alarmed, it’s probably just me.

I really don’t know what to make of Tyler Perry but you kind of have to admire a man who is at a place in his career where he can make any film and play any character he wants. To me though it seems like Tyler Perry just always plays Tyler Perry; whether it be in drag, wielding a shotgun or wielding a shotgun whilst in a dress … but when I caught the first trailer for ALEX CROSS I have to admit I was intrigued. He has some mighty big gumshoes to fill after Morgan Freeman’s portrayal of the detective from the James Patterson novels. Call it morbid curiosity but I kind of want to see what he does with the role.

ON TELEVISION…

I should have never doubted THE WALKING DEAD to deliver the goods. The third season kicked off with more than enough zombie killin’ carnage to put a smile on George A. Romero and only really let up a few times, one of which was a gnarly amputation. I’m really looking forward to this season as the prison story run in the comics has been among my favorite so far, knowing some of the craziness that’s about to go down only gets me more excited. On top of that; not knowing what new surprises the AMC TV series has in store on top of the comics will ensure my butt will be sitting in front of the TV the next several Sundays.

Don’t forget to check out the new AitH weekly column “Out of the Grave” that’s dedicated to all things walking and dead every Monday!

I fell shamefully behind in my BOARDWALK EMPIRE viewing for a couple of weeks, zombies and serial killers took priority, but I’m all caught up now and looking forward to a new episode of the HBO show this Sunday. It looks like Nucky’s backdoor political dealings could be jeopardized by some do-gooders in Washington D.C. … looks like a good time to start drinking.

I’m still loving the seventh season of DEXTER, mostly due to this season’s antagonist who has a brilliant mix of class and ruthlessness. Last week it would appear that this guy did Dexter a favor by way of a case of mistaken identity but he is too cunning and motivated to let that stand in his way for long but some loose ends with the long closed “Bay Harbor Butcher” case have begun sowing doubts in at least one cop’s head. It was officially announced that an eighth season would be the last for DEXTER so I am beginning to wonder how this is all going to wrap up and I’m beginning to suspect not happily.

ON DVD & BLU-RAY…

When it comes to Wes Anderson flicks I found there seem to be only two groups of people; those that really dig his style or those just dismiss them entirely as pretentious quirk. I fall into the former category and completely enjoy his unique aesthetic and am very excited to finally check out his latest opus MOONRISE KINGDOM. Since it only received a painfully limited theatrical run I missed it on the big screen but I’ll definitely be checking it out this weekend on Blu-ray.

It’s been a couple of years but you’ll finally be able to own the biggest movie ever made in the third dimension the way it was meant to be seen. Yup, James Cameron’s groundbreaking mega-blockbuster AVATAR is finally getting a home release in the 3D Blu-ray format. While AVATAR 3D has been previously available prior to this week it could only be obtained as part of a package deal with a new 3D TV setup.

Tom Hanks is awesome, I think that is a universally known fact by this point so any old Hanks flicks making their way to Blu-ray have my attention. When it comes to oft quoted movies A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (new to Blu this week) has some serious gems and I love seeing Hanks play an embittered hardass coach trying to build a group of women into a baseball team during WWII. “Are you crying? Are you crying?! THERE’S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!” Classic.
