What will you be watching this weekend? (September 7)

Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday, we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.

So what’s on your movie agenda this weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…

IN THEATERS…

It’s not too often that my neck of the woods gets a limited release but this weekend THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY is hitting my podunk town and I’m excited to catch this new thriller for a few reasons. Firstly it has Bruce Willis which pretty much guarantees that my butt will be in the seat along with Sigourney Weaver, who keeps popping up at the end of awesome movies recently. On top of that it’s being directed by Mabrouk Mechri, a relative newcomer out of France who surprised the hell out of me with totally kickass JCVD a couple years back. What really grabs my interest though is that the lead in TCLOD is played by Henry Cavill, the soon to be MAN OF STEEL, and up until now the only roles I’ve seen him in are historical dramas and highly stylized fantasies. While he’s been solid in those I’m excited to see what he can do with a modern day thriller.

The only other new release that has piqued any of my interest is THE WORDS, which stars Bradley Cooper as a struggling writer who turns to what he believes to be victimless plagiarism. As something of a writer myself I think I speak for most by calling that a dick move and I kind of want to see this flick just to see if Cooper’s character gets to suffer the consequences of his thievery … and to ogle a bit of Zoë Saldana . ON TELEVISION…

Well my TV schedule kind of blew wide open in a matter of two weeks. It’s going to be a rough wait for the second half of the final season BREAKING BAD to air but I guess it forces me to try out a show that I’ve been meaning to check out … I like to be a glass half full sort of guy.

Now into its second season on Starz BOSS seems to have everything I look for in a political drama with the welcomed bonus of Kelsey Grammer. I have a full season to check out before I get into the new episodes but from what little of BOSS I have managed to catch it looks like it might make it into my regular lineup. I just love the idea of a nefarious Grammer pulling political strings … hell, given the opportunity I could see myself voting for the guy in real life just to see what would happen. It doesn’t hurt its chances that I grew up watching FRASIER by my own choice … I can’t explain why I loved that show so much at the age of 11, it sure helped my vocabulary though.

I’m still firmly on the HELL ON WHEELS train and I don’t expect to be getting off any time soon. This season has seen some pretty badass happenings and this weekends episode, titled “The Railway Job”, teases that Cullen’s past finally catches up with him. I reckon some kind of showdown will be in order so I’ll be watching intently.

 

ON DVD & BLU-RAY…

This week is a mixed bag of awesome on the homefront that includes some classic horror and at least one romantic comedy I might be able to sit through.

There are a handful of actors that have a direct line to my humor and Jason Segel is definitely one of them. While I missed THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT in theaters I fully intend to check it out in all of its “unrated” glory on Blu-ray this weekend. I’m not a big fan of romantic comedies in general but I’m willing to make exceptions if the right people are involved and I hear the lovely Emily Blunt takes a crossbow bolt to the knee like a champ, if that’s not funny I don’t know what is.

With the holy month of horror fast approaching it’s definitely time to start stocking up on some scare flicks for October viewing. This week a couple of classics (in different aspects) hit Blu-ray shelves for the first time and should be solid flick picks for any Halloween movie marathons you may have planned.

First up is the the essential ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN from 1948. Pretty much all of the classic Universal monsters are represented in this irreverent comedy crossover and I still find it gut bustingly funny sixty-some years later (I can’t be the only one). On the opposite end of the horror spectrum RE-ANIMATOR, the goretastic cult-classic from 1985, made its way to Blu-ray earlier this week. In the practical horror effects department it doesn’t get much better than this flick, plus it takes “getting head” to a very literal level.
