This year’s lineup at the Toronto International Film Festival already has a ton of interesting titles making their world premieres. The Peter Farrelly movie about the filming of Rocky, titled I Play Rocky, is making its debut along with big titles that include Danny Boyle’s Ink, as well as Chris Rock’s highly anticipated Misty Green, Siân Heder’s new film Being Heumann, as well as Alpha Gang and Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.
This year’s Gala and Special Presentations feature films from nearly 30 countries, highlighting distinctive artistic visions by leading global directors including: Pedro Almodóvar, Danny Boyle, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Lee Chang-dong, Jesse Eisenberg, Gael García Bernal, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Mike Leigh, John Madden, Rachel Morrison, Cristian Mungiu, Chris Rock, Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Florian Zeller and Andrey Zvyagintsev.
According to Deadline, Wild Horse Nine, the latest film from Martin McDonagh, has now been added to the slate of films. McDonagh writes and directs the film, which sports a cast that includes John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Mariana di Girolamo, Ailín Salas, with Tom Waits, and Parker Posey. Searchlight Pictures has just unveiled the humorous trailer to the film.
The official synopsis reads,
“Shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, CIA agents Chris (John Malkovich) and Lee (Sam Rockwell) are dispatched from Santiago to Easter island by their bureau chief, MJ (Steve Buscemi). Amongst the Island’s iconic statues, and as the longtime partners wrestle with their dark pasts and present conspiracies, Chris’s newfound bond with a pair of rebellious students (Mariana di Girolamo and Ailín Salas) threatens to send everyone’s trip to this remote paradise sideways.” Producers on the film include McDonagh, Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin and Anita Overland.
Another film that has been added is the upcoming Werner Herzog project, Bucking Fastard. Kate and Rooney Mara play Jean and Joan Holbrooke in Bucking Fastard, focusing on “two sisters who are so close to each other that they speak in unison, love the same man, and have the same dreams. They even make the same slip of tongue in unison. In search of an imaginary land, the Orkneys – where true love is possible – they start digging a tunnel through an entire mountain range.”
Herzog (The Bad Lieutenant, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Nosferatu the Vampire) directs Bucking Fastard from his own script. He recently spoke about the curious-sounding film, saying, “Bucking Fastard is a film that, for me, completes a circle in an operatic triptych with my previous films, Fitzcarraldo and Grizzly Man. We cannot see the world as Jean and Joan Holbrooke see it, but we do see how the world reacts to them — through the courts and the press, through those that want to help and those who want to use them, through the eyes of beasts both tame and wild, and even through their own echoes in the core of the earth.”
