Will I Spit on Your Grave spit on the MPAA and go “unrated” in theaters?

We’ve been getting lots of I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE goods lately, most recently our own Chris Bumbray’s review of the flick, as well as the official one-sheet. But this here might be the most intriguing goody of all.

According to AICN’s “Quint”, who was at FantasiaFest’s I SPIT Q&A, the filmmakers and Anchor Bay are looking to bypass the MPAA and go with an unrated version of the film for theaters. Of course, a DVD being tagged “unrated” isn’t unusual, but these guys want the flick to play on the big screen beforehand (who can blame them?) and are currently talking to owners to gauge interest.

The reason for this is simple and obvious: they’d have to slice the penis right off of the flick to get an R, and apparently the MPAA asked for something in the neighborhood of 110 separate cuts to get there (it was given an R back in June for pervasive strong sadistic brutal violence, rape and torture, nudity and language). The filmmakers are none too keen on that notion, and evidently they have Anchor Bay’s support to shoot for an uncut release.

This could wind up being a pretty juicy side-story for I SPIT, which has gathered some positive buzz based on the Fantasia screening. If it does indeed wind up nabbing a few theaters, it could make for a hot ticket this October. We’ll try to keep you in the know as this plays out.
