The Curse of Willow Song trailer: Karen Lam’s experimental horror film is coming to DVD and digital

Evangeline and Bring It On: Cheer or Die director Karen Lam drew inspiration from Japanese films in general and an experimental silent film called Pages of Madness in particular when crafting her horror movie The Curse of Willow Song – and it seems to have turned out pretty well, as Fangoria reminds us that The Curse of Willow Song won the Best British Columbia Film award when it premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival way back in 2020. Now the film is finally making its way to DVD and digital, thanks to Uncork’d Entertainment, and a trailer can be seen in the embed above.

The DVD and digital release is scheduled for September 26th.

The Curse of Willow Song has the following synopsis: Willow Song, a recovering addict and parolee, struggles to start over. Willow finds herself in a concrete wasteland. Facing isolation and displacement, shadows creep into Willow’s mind and her nightmares become too real.

Valerie Tian of Jennifer’s Body and Juno (you might remember her character’s “All babies want to get borned” line from that one) stars in the film and is joined in the cast by Simon Chin (Snake Eyes), Elfina Luk (Skyscraper), Adam Lolacher (The 100), Johannah Newmarch (When Calls the Heart), and Ingrid Nilson (The Magicians).

Uncork’d Entertainment’s Keith Leopard provided this statement: “This film has so much to offer. It will appeal to the genre audience but also the Asian community — as represented in front of and behind the camera. Karen Lam is truly one of the most exceptional filmmakers out there, and The Curse of Willow Song reiterates that.

This one may be a bit too trippy and experimental for my taste, but I’m willing to give it a chance if I hear positive reactions to it once it’s on home video.
