He’s also been taking every chance he can to talk about these projects. Hell it was just a few days ago when Heisserer decided to open up about this THING prequel. Well the trend continues today with Heisserer talking to iF Magazine about not only that prequel but ELM STREET and FINAL DESTINATION 5 as well! It’s especially interesting to see Heisserer talking about the fifth installment to the FINAL DESTINATION series considering we haven’t really heard much about the details. Ready for the skinny?
“What I tell my friends is that everybody that’s involved in making this movie, we’re all enormous fans of Carpenter’s movie. That’s why all of us were equally adamant that they don’t remake it. The best we do, is create a companion piece to that and it allows us to spend more time in that world and with these eyes and create a paranoid thriller the way Carpenter’s was. For as gory as it was, what made it so amazing, it was just a paranoid thriller in the way some of Agatha Christie’s thrillers were. We knew that going into this movie as well. We’ve done a lot of hard thinking on this prequel and I would say it’s probably the closest you’re going to get something like Carpenter’s film.”
That is, of course, in regards to THE THING prequel heading our way. Heisserer even talks a bit about the possibility of an ELM STREET sequel:
“I came to the set of this movie last summer with a binder full of ideas and that binder grew twice its size during the shooting and I have plenty of things to expand on what Wesley gave us in terms of mythology. Even now, we know so little about Krueger. We know he showed up, he was a groundskeeper at this pre-school and he had a fondness for these kids. We don’t know where he came from, we don’t know what this situation is, and why he became a pedophile. There’s a lot of stuff.”
And lastly, FINAL DESTINATION 5:
“It will be out next year. That’s the plan. We’re going to go back to what made the original work and build from there. We’re going to make sure we’re creating good suspense horror movie that happens to be a FINAL DESTINATION movie. That’s not to say it’s not going to have the hallmarks of what we’ve come to love about the franchise. We learned a lot of lessons from the fourth movie, and we want to show we’ve grown from that. I also want to show what a love about the franchise, and most of what I loved about it, is all in the first one.”
Alright… glad to finally hear about some direction to this fifth FINAL DESTINATION flick. We all know the fourth film was supposed to be THE final desination… but obviously that’s not the case. It seems like we’ve heard all that before when THE FINAL DESINATION was announced, but I do dig Heisserer’s praise for the first film. I’m going to go ahead and take that as a very good sign. Just don’t build the entire flick around some 3D gimmick… again.
