Just the other day Jake hit you all with the news that ZOMBIELAND writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were chatting away about the upcoming ZOMBIELAND sequel. Well it seems that’s not all the duo are talking about…
MTV recently sat down with the screenwriters to chat about ZOMBIELAND… Not the film franchise but the potential television show! You see some of you may or may not know that ZOMBIELAND was first intended as a television series way back in 2005 but when Reese and Wernick were getting turned down left and right they somehow found a path that led them to the ZOMBIELAND we know and love today. But with the film’s huge success could that mean we may be seeing that television series after all?
It seems if the duo have their way we will! Reese states: “We always thought [it should be a TV series]. If you watch the movie with that in mind, you will see some remnants of the television show. We have the ‘Zombie Kill of the Week,’ which was always intended to happen every week. The movie ends on a cliffhanger; it doesn’t have a real resolution. [The movie’s ending] is just our guys driving off into the sunset for some new adventures. That’s because, that’s how the television pilot ended.”
Wernick adds: “It would have to be shot differently. It’s funny; you write action and you write gore and you write horror and it’s all how its shot, how it’s presented. You can write it as graphic as you want, it’s just [up to the director] to cut away on the gory stuff on TV. Whereas, you would show it with the clown and the mallet in the movie, where the blood squirts all over the place.”
The writers go on to talk about how the characters would have to be recast considering Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone (below), Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin are surely busy with their film careers. Now this wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing but let’s be logical here… Take those names out of the equation… Hell take just Woody Harrelson’s name out of the picture and ZOMBIELAND probably doesn’t end up as awesome as it was. Would you guys agree? So if that is indeed the case, they’d have to score some spot-on casting to make a ZOMBIELAND series work.
Unfortunately it may be a while until we see this ZOMBIELAND series start to happen considering Reese and Wernick have a lot on their plate right now including ZOMBIELAND 2, GI JOE 2 and DEADPOOL. You can head over to MTV to read the whole interview or to check out the video clip of said interview. Hopefully things pan out and we do end up seeing a ZOMBIELAND series. And you can bet your ass we’ll be keeping you updated every step of the way!
