I can’t tell you which genre project we’re writing about more here at AITH: SCREAM 4 or AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” The drama surrounding SCREAM is always at the top of everybodies lists but there’s no denying the updates coming from “The Walking Dead” have been insane as well! It seems we’re writing about this shite almost every day… but hey, don’t misinterpret this as complaining. On the contrary, everything thus far from “The Walking Dead” points to this thing being awesome! So who wouldn’t want to hear about the umpteenth “Walking Dead” update?
In case you guys haven’t guessed it by now… I’m here to bring you all the latest on “The Walking Dead.” You see the fine folks over at AMC were generous enough to toss up yet another interview with a “Walking Dead” crew memeber. This time it’s production designer Greg Melton. But that’s not all! Along with the interview we’re also treated to another behind the scenes shot from the series. The shot, found below, offers up Melton alongside director Frank Darabont as the two ride a tank with a dead corpse. Got to love that off time, don’t you Greg?
The interview isn’t half bad either in case you were wondering. Melton touches on a number of things including how he got the job, how he used the comic for the design and losing a helicopter on set. Q: What visual inspiration did you get from the comics?
A: It’s like having a storyboard of the whole production. Usually I get a storyboard of an effects sequence or an action sequence. But it’s very interesting to have something from beginning to end. There are a lot of iconic images in that graphic novel that we have taken into the series. People will go, “Oh yeah that’s the downtown Atlanta shot.” For instance the police station in the graphic novel: One day I was driving around and saw right behind our production office this little brick building that looked exactly like the police station. So there are a lot of points like that, and then the hospital is something we really took to a whole new level as far as the devastation and really showing for the first time the scale of the apocalypse in Rick’s town.
