One of the runaway hits of the fall movie season has been A24’s Lance Oppenheim/Nathan Fielder documentary, You Can See Everything, about disgraced Theranos founder and fraudster Elizabeth Holmes. It’s been a strong runner-up at the box office over the last few weeks, with it already making over $50 million domestically. This weekend, it seems poised to take the top spot, with A24 expanding its theater count to over 3,000 screens. It should make about $15 million, as there’s little to no competition for it out there in the marketplace.
Runner-up should go to last week’s champ, Clayface. It will be interesting to see how front-loaded the DC film is. It has a strong A-minus CinemaScore rating, which suggests it will have legs, but a drop of over 50% is still likely. Expect it to come in at around $12 million. Another movie that hopefully will have some staying power is Travis Knight’s passion project, Wildwood. The Laika-produced film has been hailed as a masterpiece, but so far the sales have been modest. After an $11 million opening, the hope is it will suffer only a modest decline, which would get it to about $8 million or so for the weekend.
With those three in the top spots, do any newcomers like the Liam Neeson-led The Mongoose or Christmas with the Kringles have a chance at the top 5? Unlikely. Instead, it will likely be stacked with holdovers, with Street Fighter looking at about $5 million, while last weekend’s sleeper hit, Wicker, should have a modest fall to make about $3 million.
Otherwise, it seems all but certain to be a very slow weekend, with Halloween activities taking a big bite out of the box office. Folks will be trick-or-treating on Saturday, and older audiences might be at Halloween parties or attending a retro horror screening (I’m going to see a screening of Scream myself that evening).
