We’ve seen the story of Jesus’ birth many times, but we’ve rarely seen it look quite like this. The new trailer for Zero A.D.: The Birth of Christ puts a suspenseful, thriller-like spin on the Nativity story, with The Passion of the Christ star Jim Caviezel taking on the role of the ruthless King Herod.
Coming from Angel Studios and directed by Alejandro Monteverde, the filmmaker behind Sound of Freedom, the movie also stars Deva Cassel as Mary, Sam Worthington as Herod’s son Antipater, and Jamie Ward as Joseph.
Here’s the synopsis:
An empire in decay. A ruler consumed by fear. A star rising over Bethlehem. When Christ is born, Herod’s terror erupts into the slaughter of the innocents, and Mary must protect the child promised to save the world. As violence spreads and hope flickers, the true battle begins—not for a throne, but for the soul of mankind.
Monteverde describes the movie (to USA Today) as a story about a baby who was persecuted from the moment he was born, saying that perspective gave the familiar story a sense of danger and urgency. He describes Zero A.D. as a “spiritual thriller,” built around the conflict between darkness and light.
Perhaps the most immediately intriguing aspect of Zero A.D. is Caviezel’s role as King Herod. Caviezel is best known for playing Jesus in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, so seeing him on the opposite side of the story is an interesting piece of casting. In Zero A.D., he plays Herod as a paranoid ruler determined to destroy the child he believes could eventually take his throne.
The cast also includes Gael García Bernal as Mary’s father Joachim, David Harewood as Balthazar, and Ben Mendelsohn as Nahash.
While the basic events are familiar, Monteverde’s approach is designed to emphasize the danger surrounding the Holy Family. The birth of Jesus isn’t presented simply as a peaceful religious event. It’s the beginning of a dangerous pursuit, with a powerful king willing to kill innocent children to eliminate a potential rival. That gives Zero A.D. a very different flavor from traditional Nativity movies. The story remains rooted in the Biblical account, but the filmmakers are approaching it as a suspenseful cinematic thriller about persecution, survival, faith, and the battle between good and evil.
