Zombieland writers kill an old lady in their directorial debut

Have Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick successfully cloned themselves? The ZOMBIELAND writers have been on a genre script tear since their first hit film, since writing VENOM, GI JOE 2, DEADPOOL and COWBOY NINJA VIKING. Unhappy with just writing awesome films though, Reese and Wernick have done what most writers eventually do: they’ve turned to directing.

The duo will make their directorial debut with DOC AND HOWIE an upcoming comedy originally written by Steve Leff (sure to get a rewrite by Reese/Wernick). Once titled DOC AND HOWIE WHACK A GRANNY, the film is pretty much as that ill-fated title describes it. Two goofball teens accidentally “kill” an elderly neighbor when they don’t help her up the stairs with her groceries. When the old lady’s hot granddaughters show up looking for a shoulder to cry on, the dudes eventually realize they’re going to have to tell the babes the truth about their involvement.

At first glance the film sounds like a half-asses DUDE, WHERE’S MY HAROLD AND KUMAR? but Reese and Wernick are a little too slick for something that derivative. I’m not sure what it is yet but there’s got to be something here that I’m missing.

Ivan Reitman’s Montecito will produce the film for Paramount.
