Zorro seeks revenge in post-apocalyptic Mexico in Fox’s Zorro Reborn

Any Zorro fans out there? If so, this story is definitely for you.

After a six year hiatus, the banded-eye swashbuckler is making a return in Fox’s ZORRO REBORN. Thing is, he won’t be wielding whips and swords in his native California this time out, word is a post-apocalyptic spin on the character is being set in Mexico. There, he’ll seek revenge in a desolate wasteland of the future.

Written by Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy (HARKER), and to be directed by previsualization specialist Rpin Suwannath (X-MEN, THE MATRIX, CHRONICLES OF NARNIA), ZORRO REBORN is said to boast the talents of a young up and coming actor, yet to be named. The project is now in early development.

Here’s how the L.A. Times describes the film:

In this version, Zorro will be less a caped crusader for justice than a one-man vigilante force bent on revenge, in a western story that has echoes of both Sergio Leone and “No Country for Old Men.”

Sounds solid to me, and this coming from a casual Zorro fan at best.

What do you think? Is a dark reimagining of Zorro something you’d want to see? Is putting the character in a dystopic future a clever idea or would it feel oddly out of place? Better yet, who do you think should play the new Zorro?

THE LEGEND OF ZORRO star Catherine Zeta-Jones!
