Strike Back below!
by: Paul Tassi Aug. 21, 2009

For most of yesterday, I was trying to think of what the Na'vi reminded me of while watching the AVATAR trailer. It was on the tip of my tongue, then suddenly, I started seeing it pop up in comments everywhere.

DELGO.

That's right, the movie that you never heard of until after it set the record for the worst opening weekend in history, grossing a mere $511,920 despite wide release in 2,160 theaters. The comparisons of AVATAR to DELGO have been floating around the internet for the past 24 hours now, but now someone actually sat down and decided to make a visual side-by-side comparison of the two.

The results are pretty damn conclusive and practically warrant a likeness lawsuit from the lowest grossing movie ever to be filed against the director of the highest grossing movie ever. How’s that for irony?

Check out some of the undeniably similar comparisons below and click on them for even more.

Source: Denhilation

Extra Tidbit: Sure, the plots have practically zero overlap, but COME ON!!

Yeah, but...
It doesn't really matter. Avatar is going to make a lot of money at the box office this year.

I'm sorry, but trying to suggest a 14 year old, $200million, project ripped of Delgo (of all fucking movies) is just a stretch, it's pathetic. You can grab screen shots of ANY movie and link them to another movie.

This is a pretty lame comparison. Avatar in 3D looks flawless.

But, the hate teen boys developed for Titanic back in the day is sure to spill over into Cameron's future films.

Just saw the 3D IMAX roadshow
I was impressed enough by the 15 mins I saw to line up at Christmas -but- The "Ive seen this before...'" feeling will deny the game-changer status this movie was hyped to be.
With this Delgo comparison I feel symapthy for all those CG artists and designers slaving away for JC only to be compared to that shit-pile Delgo.

I don't hate James Cameron
I love most of his films. I grew up on Aliens and T2.

I'm just consistently annoyed by little details in his films that I think distract from the experience and serve only to say 'I'm James Cameron, I'm awesome.'

I love Aliens, but that extended cut that now permeates television (where you find out Ripley had a daughter, you see Newt's family explore the planet like Lost in Space, and watch 100 poorly made paper mache aliens get blasted in succession by sentry guns) is just terrible.

And Avatar in Imax 3D was fucking epic!!!!! I've never seen a 3D movie until that preview, and let's just say, it deserves all the hype it's getting. I mean, I will watch Avatar like 3 times at LEAST in 3D, just because once it leaves theaters, it won't be the same movie, AT ALL. Fuck all the Avatar haters, probably holding their breath for New Moon or fucking The Last Airbender, or some shit.

Fuck ANYONE hating on James fuckin Cameron. He has the HIGEST ratio of great movies to shitty movies than ANY other director in our time. I grew up on Terminator 1 and 2 and Aliens, and to the guy saying Aliens made you think Cameron thought his shit don't stink, Shut the fuck up! You sound like the biggest douchebag I've ever not wanted to meet, for fear of breaking your fuckin nose.

Go back to Tarantino, and his ridiculous fucking subtitled piece of shit DRAMA called Inglorious Basterds. How do you fuck up an epic premise for a movie like Jews killing Nazi's brutally and non-stop? You spend the entire movie on a jew girl running a movie theater with a negro, and make it into some half-assed love story between her and a fuckin NAZI! God, I hated Inglorious Basterds. Why on earth would you not give the spotlight to the basterds is BEYOND ME. And splitting the film into chapters was SOOOOOO Kill Bill, Quentin. Find a new calling card, for fuck sakes.

The average moviegoer doesn't care how long Avatar has been in production. I'm sure Avatar will make money and do pretty well, but it'll be far from the kind of hit the studios expect it to be.

Why I'm an Avatar Skeptic
To quote Peter Griffin, Avatar 'insists upon itself.' James Cameron movies have all had this strange tendency to take their own supposed revolutionary brilliance as a given. That extended cut of Aliens makes me feel like Cameron genuinely doesn't believe his shit stinks.

And that kind of arrogance stinks just as bad here on Avatar as it did on Titanic.

I'm sick of hearing about the technology to film the damn thing. Its no substitute for story telling and film direction. Chris Nolan made one of the greatest action epics of all time with almost no CG...and he didn't get a single Oscar nomination to show for it.

Yeah, Titanic is terrible. Terrible films sweep the Oscars, are universally loved but critics, and become the highest grossing film ever based entirely on word of mouth. Yeah, that makes for a terrible film. Please.

Also, Titanic is far more than a love story. It carried a strong social commentary that far out weighed the surface level love story.

Titanic is terrible. Cameron makes a movie about one of the most searing tragedies of the past 100 years in which entire families were wiped out or cut in half and he makes it simply the background of a predictable love story. If it had been the same story but about 9/11 we'd have all been grotesquely offended by its shallow exploitation.

And don't get me wrong, I think James Cameron is a terrific director when he can keep himself mildly in check. Aliens, T2 are both fantastic, I almost never not watch them when they're on TV. True Lies is the only post T2 movie to ever effectively use Arnold's charm and screen presence. I just wish the prick would realize not every idea that crosses his brain stem is worth $5 million worth of production money.

First off, The Dark Knight is fucking far from being one of the greatest action epics. Overhyped, overrated, overplotted, laughably over - the - top - Bale - Batman - voice is more like it.

Secondly, you seem like one of those people who are still sore that Titanic is #1, that it still bests all your fanboy geek films, like TDK, at the box office.

"It insists upon itself"...Love it! but its true. CG is no sub for a good story. I'm not gonna say i'm not slightly amped to see avatar but It is a few notches lower on the belt because Cameron is a douche. (who also happens to make really good movies.) If this movie does well though, Cameron will pat himself on the back to death. Then we wont have to deal with him anymore.

Delgo vs. Avatar?
That's not too far-fetched. Delgo was in development for 10 years, starting in 1999. It was actually Anne Bancroft's last film role. And yes, Delgo is pretty mediocre; about a 3/10.

James Cameron has been successfully sued before. Harlan Ellison sued him because elements of Terminator looked too much like one of Ellison's short stories. That's why, when you watch Terminator ...

All those visuals were described in the Avatar scriptment back in 1997.

Sad thing is how this site was all over McG's cock for the shitty T4, and is trashing Cameron over his original decade old project. Not cool.

There's no way Cameron could be sued over this, all humor aside, unless there's a vague similarity clause somewhere.

Delgo Reps "Hey it kinda looks the same!"

Judge "Get the fuck out of my court."

AVATAR will un doubtly get best movie of the year hands down. oh and this article about Delgo and Avatar is funny lol. doesnt bother me tho.

But it wouldn't be the first time that Cameron got his @$$ in a ringer by copying other artists (the infamous Harlan Ellison incident, or when Cameron apparently traced, I believe, Sally Mann's photographs for the drawings in 'Titanic' without her permission...hell, if memory serves, he even initially tried to claim credit for his wonderful artistic skills in that particular case).

Plenty of time for an acclaimed, Oscar-winning director to plagiarize one of the most uninspired films of the decade.

I kid, however the plot's resemblance to Ferngully, a film much older, is a lot more obvious. I hope Tim Curry has a cameo as Hexxus. In 3D man! wWoow.

Sure the dates are correct, but the guy had a clear vision for Avatar back when he first thought it up. That's what made him realize it couldn't be done at that time.

But all of that aside, movies have been around for too long and there are just plain too many of them out there for this comparison to be anything more than coincidence.

Oh wait, Cameron has been developing Avatar for 14 years. That's right. Clearly he lifted his design choices from a crappy animated kid flick that he most likely hasn't even heard of, let alone seen.

I can just see him in a conference room with his artists.

Cameron: "I have this idea. We have these flying creatures that-"

Artist: "Delgo did it."

Cameron: "...crap. Okay, well what about floating land masses-"

Artist: "Delgo did that too."

Cameron: "Dammit! What didn't Delgo do?"

Give me a break.
