Exclusive scoop: Story & character details for Transformers: The Last Knight

06.14.2016

Now, since we’ve gotten the title reveal there’s been plenty of speculation to go around in terms of what the story for the fifth film will be. After all, a title like that really doesn’t reveal much, so it could really go anywhere, but today we’re going to clear some of that up.

Now, I can’t say that I’m exactly over the moon for a new Transformers film from Michael Bay, but I am definitely a fan of the director. I just wish he’d do more films like The Rock, Pain and Gain, or the tragically underrated 13 Hours. While I enjoyed the first Transformers film, I’d love to see his talents on projects that don’t involve transforming hunks of metal, but this one is happening no matter what, so let’s see if there’s anything to be excited about as a result.

For starters, we already know Mark Wahlberg is back, which we can confirm. How he plays into the story, we don’t know, but his Cade Yeager is definitely in play here, as well as returning castmember Josh Duhamel as Lt. Col William Lennox. Also recently added is Anthony Hopkins, whose presence should make more sense with this scoop.

The story for Transformers: The Last Night will involve Optimus Prime finding his home planet, Cybertron, now a dead planet, which he comes to find he was responsible for killing. He finds a way to bring the planet back to life, but in order to do so he needs to find an artifact. And of course, that artifact is on Earth. What is that artifact? Well, here’s where things get weird.

Somehow the artifact ties into Merlin, the magician of King Arthur lore. Apparently, the power of magic was given to Merlin by a Transformer and somehow the artifact ties into this. As far as what the artifact is, we can’t say, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it has something to do with the famed sword Excaliber (I mean, they did make sure to include a sword in the new logo, didn't they?). That’s just speculation on my part, but it sounds reasonable. Of course, we’ve seen the effects of time travel in these films already and are aware of Transformers visiting Earth throughout the planets existence, so that certainly fits with the universe they’ve created and now it appears that the story will add British Mythology to the narrative.

In terms of new and returning Transformers, we can confirm that Bumblebee will return, this time in a leadership role, while Optimus is off on his own mission. Also returning are Hound, Crosshairs, and Drift. The Autobots, now settled on Earth, are making their home in the Badlands of South Dakota, which will serve as their base of operations. Also returning are the Dinobots with the added addition of "mini-dinobots".  What those are or how they play out is unclear, but there you go.

There will be three new Transformers as well, including some with “English” origins, which is likely where Anthony Hopkins will come into play. One such character is called "The Creator" who is said to have ties to the origins of the Transformers. A Transformer with an English accent named Cogman, whose alt-mode is an Astin Martin, will appear, as well as a Transformer named Squeaks whose alt mode is a Vespa.

In addition, as has already been officially confirmed, the main villain is again Megatron, who will be back in full form with an alt mode of a jet fighter.

And that’s what we have for the latest installment of Transformers. It sounds consistent with the high-concept ties that the previous films have used, so it’s not a huge stretch in that regard. How it all comes together will be another story, but you can certainly expect the usual amount of Robotic Bayhem Carnage, which seems to be the main appeal to these films at the moment. I just hope it’s not three hours worth this time.

TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT is set to open on June 23, 2017.

Sounds like the same old hot garbage to me, but then I guess i'm not really the intended audience. I fully agree that Bay can and should be doing better stuff than this. Still the fact that he does make stuff like Pain and Gain in between Transformers movies is to his credit.

Squeeks sounds like Go-bots Scooter...Hmmm.
I'll give it a fair chance as I do enjoy elements of the 4 movies. I'm guessing Frank Welker is rightfully taking his place as Megatron again. Weaving was great but I highly doubt his comment about non-juicy roles will entice Bay to bring him back on. I'd rather the Welker anyway. He is afterall [link] else.

Plot really sounds like a story pitch from some writer not prepared so he makes up the story by just grabbing random ideas.

This isn't even confirmed to be official, so don't take this too seriously. However, it might actually be great and improved.

These movies, like the new TMNT movies, are made for kids, pre-teens, and teens. People in those age groups probably do enjoy them. These movies aren't marketed toward adults.

That story details already sounds ridiculously dumb. I mean really? Merlin? That's the best they can come up with? No Quintessons or Unicron or Ultra Magnus or whatever else that the Transformers cartoons were awesome for? Really? Merlin? Fuck you, Michael Bay.

You don't seem to have a problem that Marvel and DC brings possibly literal mythical figures that has something to do with.

This is most likely a rumor, it's not confirmed. So don't take it too seriously.

Ehh. You don't know me. Though true, I don't have any reason to hate on Marvel or DC for bringing mythology to their universe because it was already part of those universes for a very long time. Meanwhile this.. this Merlin connection with the Transformers is iffy at best and have never been hinted in any of the Transformers' past incarnations that I know of. In fact it sound so forced up its ass that you can almost feel Optimus Prime's eyes nearly popped out in anguish.

In case you didn't know; which you obviously don't seem to know at all. The G1 cartoon did feature not just Merlin himself, but the characters from Arthurian tales in "A Decepticon Raider in King Arthur's Court". Also, instead of magic like we see Harry Potter, The Hobbit, LOTR etc, I hope you realize that "magic" has actually already been confirmed to be part of the Cybertronian technology. So no, this plot device would not turn out to be "fucking retarded" after all. If you enjoy the G1 cartoons but will hate this movie, also taken the inspiration out of one of the episodes, then you are a hypocrite.

You don't know me either.

Mr Bay will never learn...

This all sounds stupid again, (except for prime's trip to cybertron) why is it again about something important on earth?!! And what the hell with those new names, where are the great ones like Ultra magnus, hot rod, kup, soundblaster, metroplex, fortress maximuss etc.
And i'm fine with bumblebee as a temporary new leader but if its without his voice again then that to will be very stupid.

This isn't even confirmed to be official. You probably will see them in the movie or after. I do hope we can hear Bumblebee's voice again, I think it should be now Tom Holland to voice him.

Well that sounds horrible...

What's the deal with tying the Transformers into all of Earth's history? Aside from just being a dumb plot device, it also steals away from any importance of the first movie where Sam Witwicky was the key to the Transformers survival (or something like that...). So they're really not that new of a phenomenon to Earth and have really been integral throughout all of our advancement. Really takes the punch out of the first three movies when you think about

As for Anthony Hopkins, I'm assuming he's playing the Creator instead of another Transformer. You don't get someone like Hopkins and just use him for voiceover work on a throwaway character.

Why should you care? This movie is gonna take place both Earth and outer space.

Either way, this movie might turn out to be a real big hit.

Sounds much worse than I could have imagined

This isn't even a series in the sense that there seems to be a storyline that's being followed. It's like the creative team are a bunch of children coming up with random ideas and fusing them together no matter how outlandish they might be. I'll be sitting this one out just like I did the last one.

That was my first thought reading the article...
I mean, apart from him there is not so many actor who could play an old Merlin talking to giant CGI robots...
Sean Connery is retired and most of the other already did it in other franchises (LotR and HP for instance) or have, unfortunately, passed away...

Here's a question.

What happened to Galvatron? Are we completely negating continuity here?

Galvatron and Megatron are the same guy. Galvatron was just the human name given to his rebuilt body. Now that he's free of human control I'm sure he simply goes back to calling himself by his real name, Megatron.

Seriously, someone thumbs you down just for asking about Galvatron? What's with people and stroking Michael Bay's ego. Sheesh.
