Exclusive: Timeline for Star Wars films through episode IX and more on the spin-offs and new animated series!

Jun. 19, 2013by: Paul Shirey

SPOILER WARNING. Although, I’d hardly call this spoilery, you just never know these days. Some people consider the title of a movie a spoiler, so there you have it. However, most of this information has been out there for a while, so this is more of a confirmation of it. If you clicked on this story, then it’s likely you want to be here. So, let’s get to it.

A trusted and reliable source has passed on some information about the continuation of the STAR WARS franchise, starting with STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, including the projected timeline of the new trilogy and spinoffs up to 2019 and clarifies who the characters will be in the first few “solo” films. In addition, we have a little bit of info on the upcoming animated series, STAR WARS: REBELS.

First up, the timeline. I made a nifty little graphic to highlight it below, which shows the proposed release schedule of the next trilogy, as well as the spin-off films, which basically alternate each year. Disney previously announced the plan to do this, so this is more of a reiteration that it's still on the books. No word on where they’ll go after this first wave is complete, but this should keep us all occupied for the next six years at least.

Next, our source indicated that the first two STAR WARS spin-off films would, in fact, be for Han Solo and Boba Fett, respectively (as previously rumored). The Solo film will focus on Han and Chewy’s relationship, potentially on how they met and became partners on the Millennium Falcon. No details on the Boba Fett film, but my hope is to see his escape from the Sarlac Pit and subsequent journey afterwards. Apparently, the planned Yoda solo film was pulled as there is a plan to do a Lego animated show of some sort with the character.

Lastly, there are some more details on the upcoming STAR WARS: REBELS cartoon series, directed by Dave Filoni, on Disney XD. The series will feature new characters with appearances from established ones in the original trilogy and will focus on how the rebel alliance was formed to take on the Galactic Empire.  The show is expected to debut next summer.

All in all, some cool bits of info. I’m glad they’ve dropped the Yoda film, as I think Han/Chewy and Boba Fett are far more interesting characters to explore and also allows a less “Jedi-centric” focus on the spinoffs, as that will likely be a huge part of the new trilogy.

Let us know your thoughts in the strikeback below! And, check out our exclusive details on some upcoming Marvel/Disney projects here!

Extra Tidbit: What characters would you like to see in upcoming spinoffs beyond the Han Solo and Boba Fett films? Is a new Star Wars movie every year for five years starting in 2015 too much?

Yoda withdrawals!!!

Shocked and saddened to learn They backed off the Yoda standalone movie. My biggest wish is that we get a Yoda origin story sooner rather then later. As my screen name indicates, I am a huge Yoda fan. The fact that he was 900 years old when he became one with the Force gives them plenty of material to work with. Hope they just are saving it for later and have not scrapped the concept for good. I think there are a lot of fans, old and young who want to see what Yoda was like before he was the

Awesome

I'd love to see the Han film pull from Paradise Snare, Hutt Gambit and Rebel Dawn. And yes, get Dash Rendar into these films!

I love Star Wars, and I love Han Solo, but I don't want to see any more prequels. I don't want to learn how the Rebel Alliance was formed, I don't want to see the first time Han Solo shot a bounty hunter under the table. I don't care how Boba Fett became a Bounty Hunter. No more origin stories.
Tell me new stories, ones I don't know the ending to.

I really hope they stick with the 70's asthetics of the originals instead of the sterile green screen space adventure theme that Lucas went with for the prequels.

I'd love to see a Star Wars film like the game Force Unleashed. An antihero hired by Darth Vader that is tempted by the dark side and has insane powers we have not seen in a Star Wars film before. I think it would be insanely entertaining.

"The series will feature new characters with appearances from established ones in the original trilogy and will focus on how the rebel alliance was formed to take on the Galactic Empire."

Aw no way. If they use some of the existing lore that was established in the video games that can only mean one thing, the force unleashed is gonna be part of a tv series. That would make sense though cause it would give Disney a well established bad ass to help push the story along. If Im correct on this

Lets just hope marvel follows the established lore from the games and doesn't instead decide to write their own.

Ahem, Dear Disney:

If you are going into Han Solo's history, could you use Timothy Zahn's history of Solo being an Imperial Academy dropout? It's so much cooler than George Lucas' back story. While we're at it, if you could use some of Zahn's history of how the Empire took over in your back story, your series would be so much more interesting. I especially liked the automated Imperial spy system, Mara Jade, Admiral Thrawn, and the idea of Vader losing his hand as punishment for the destruction of the first

Actually, come to think of it: why don't we just forget the prequels ever happened and start fresh?

We know how he lost both hands. One to Darth Tyrannous(Count Dooku) and the other to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenobi got his legs too.

I want... a Star Wars movie/spinoff that features a Dark Jedi protagonist slash antihero. As much as I loved the original trilogy, in recent times I find them a bit too banal in its depiction of good and evil. Also, as much as I loathed the prequels it does introduce some interesting dynamics between the Jedi and the Sith. I mean, even the event of which Anakin turned dark is preceded by Mace Windu attempting to start a coup against a democratically elected leader of the Republic. Would it not

Would it not be interesting to see a story unfolds from the perspective of someone that others have deemed evil? That's something that the prequels didn't do well, because in the end it's more about Obi Wan's story than Anakin's. I think, well maybe there's another layer to darkness. Sort of like Sons of Anarchy, bad people trying to do good things by doing bad things. Heck, Han Solo was a criminal and supposedly a former Imperial pilot. I'd love to see this morally ambiguous rogue in his younger days where he doesn't always do the responsible thing, but I also would like to see that kind of scoundrel-ism from a dark Jedi/Sith. Perhaps a good revenge story, or something more noir-ish.

Hey Disney, can you cast me as the young Han Solo. Sure, I have to admit I have zero acting experience, and I lack the rugged good looks of a young Harrison Ford. But I spent a lot of time as a kid pretending to be Solo, so that has to count for something, right. Right?!

Too Much?: Hell no! The Sequel Trilogy & Spinoff's, for me @ least, would quelch my massive fanboy need for any form of cinematic Star Wars since the Prequels ended. (yes, I liked the prequels)

3rd Character Spin-Off: Darth Fucking Maul!

We've already seen a young Han Solo, and he looked just like Harrison Ford. So, we'll have a spin-off movie with a different actor as 'Young Han' while the main series continues with Mr Ford playing the proper-Han? Don't get me wrong, I'm not against seeing someone else play the part - but this doesn't seem to make much sense from a continuity point of view. Unless we're going to see Han and Chewie as kids in High School or something...

I guess I'll deal with a recast Han Solo in an origin story. HOWEVER, Disney better not try to make Indiana Jones into another Bond, recasting him every few movies to put out 20+ films. Indy dies with Harrison Ford!!

When Chewie met Solo? Really? Why do we need everything explained to us? I'm not saying it's an awful idea, but I'm sure we won't get to see Chewie ripping some arms off.

Actually a Maori(not a Samoan) ain't a bad pick since if you check out their history they are a pure Warrior race and even in WW2 has one of the most feared battalions (they scared the shit out of the Germans).
