Geoff Johns confirms that Joe Manganiello will play Deathstroke

09.08.2016

Joe Manganiello Deathstroke DC Justice League

Just last week Ben Affleck surprised everyone by tweeting a video showcasing live-action footage of Deathstroke, the DC villain who has gone up against many major DC heroes including Batman himself. It wasn't clear whether this appearance was going to be for Zack Snyder's upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE or Affleck's own standalone BATMAN film (The Wrap reported that Deathstroke would be the main villain in Affleck's Bat flick), but the identity of the actor inside the costume was a little more of a mystery, until now.

The Wall Street Journal chatted with DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns recently and Johns confirmed that Joe Manganiello will be playing Deathstroke. Exciting news, but Johns declined to comment on whether the character would show up for a cameo in JUSTICE LEAGUE. If you'll remember, this isn't the first time that Joe Manganiello and Deathstroke have been uttered in the same sentence, he was rumoured to be playing the character when he was involved with David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD but once Manganiello dropped out, the character of Deathstroke did as well.

Sound off below, how do you feel about Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke?

Good casting

As others have said, he would have made a great Shazam opposite Dwayne Johnson but he'll also make a great Deathstroke. Looking forward to seeing him tear it up on the big screen.

As DEATHSTROKE, I think he's a great casting choice. He's got the looks, he's got the physique, and he's usually seen as a charismatic guy, so it will be cool to see him as a charismatic villain, like Deadshot; someone who clearly murders and is bad, but is still a lot of fun. That being said, I don't think anybody's confident enough in him to have him be the LEAD villain in a Batman film, and Deathstroke, as a mercenary, inherently needs someone to hire him to kill Batman. So, while I'm

So, while I'm excited about this casting, I'm even more excited to see who the bigger villain is who hired him. Black Mask? Penguin, maybe? I doubt it's the Joker, but who knows?

So is DC is populating their Batman universe with actors from Raimi's Spiderman films (JK Simmons and this guy). And Marvel is using a former Batman (Keaton) for their Spider-man film. Is it so hard to find actors who haven't already been in a comic book film?

Pretty solid choice, Manganiello's a beast. I havent seen suicide squad yet but I enjoyed BvS Ultimate edition, so I'm pretty stoked for anything DC or Marvel related

DC have had three strikes and they're out for me. They could cast the best cast in the world, it's too late.

Yeah right, you're a paid film lecturer, yet you dismiss films you have not seen based on the past three previous films. And you say this despite DC having produced the original classic Superman film and The Dark Knight trilogy. Bullshit.

Yes I'm dismissing films I haven't seen based on the previous three that I have. Like dismissing Transformers 4 after knowing 1-3 is shit, or any other series of declining quality movies that started off badly.

The Dark Knight trilogy has two strong entries. But it is over, that auter has moved on. The two best Superman movies were made 40ish years ago, and bear no semblance or relevance to who WB are or what they are currently trying to accomplish, infact they're going out of their way not

WB are currently playing a transparent and desperate game of catch up with a studio whom understand their properties, characters, target audience and also have a game plan. WB have none of this, and there comes a time when they have to quit deluding themselves and accept these films are not what they needed to have been. This shared universe is not one worth investing in when the continuity for it sits within three very badly recieved films.

There comes a time when people have to stop saying "Well maybe the next one..." and simply accept the studio have fumbled the experiment entirety.

The footage looks like something from a bad 90's movie but if Ben Affleck ends up handling it in his solo Batman film I have no worries, he's an incredible director and for me his Batman is just about equal with Keaton.

I like Joe, he was great in PeeWee's latest movie.

You know, Joe is one of those actors who everything probably started off as hating because he is the typical good looking guy who gets by on his looks over his acting skills and then as time went on grows on you and you start to like him in almost anything he is in. I can see him playing a villain, especially DS. I just hope the script and setting are really about (insert spoiler here)'s death in Arkham being investigated by Batman and coming across DS as the hired hitman.

I'm hoping it will have something to do with League of Shadows. I'm really hoping they try to bring in Damian Wayne into all of this. I think it would be cool if Deathstroke is a hired gun tasked with bringing Batman to the League. In the third act we find out it's because of Batman's son. Lead in to Batman 2, we have Damian trying to be Robin and Bruce trying to be a father. Batman 3, do a version of Under the Red Hood, make it about Batman's legacy coming around full circle, leading to

This is great news. He’s at the right age, and has the right look, build, and physical demeanor to pull off Deathstroke effortlessly.

I have enjoyed all three of the DCU films immensely thus far, but I’m more than convinced that Affleck’s solo Batman film will be the best overall film out of all of them. Considering how great his first three directorial films were and how amazing his portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman was in Dawn of Justice, I honestly think he could surpass the Dark Knight in

lol... I see DC still hasn't moved beyond the "Cast the largest guy possible" method of casting.

bigkevink, the irony is that WE are rolling our eyes at you for thinking "unimposing guy should be cast for a VERY imposing villain". That's how your initial comment sounds so the Michael Cera comment actually makes sense BASED off what you said.

As others have said, you cast a physically imposing actor to play a physically imposing villain. That's what we call a "no-brainer."
