Zack Snyder wants to direct a faithful version of The Dark Knight Returns

Zack Snyder thinks he is done with the superhero genre but projects surrounding Batman, Daredevil and Elektra do pique his interest.

Few directors have had as complicated of a relationship with comic book movies than Zack Snyder. While critics have never really latched onto his work, Snyder developed a following with 300 and Watchmen (especially the director’s cut). When he made the move to bigger budget DC fare, the movies – Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Justice League – just didn’t hit the mark as far as what the iconic characters deserved. And while he still maintains friendships with his DC cast – no matter the controversy – Zack Snyder may very well be done with the supehero genre for good. Unless…

Zack Snyder recently told The Hollywood Reporter that his time in the superhero game wouldn’t be the same as when he was younger, saying, “We’ve been on the treadmill — it has not evolved. I don’t have the excitement for it that I used to have.” However, he does think he could get roused over a couple of potential properties, saying he would consider teaming with Marvel if there was a promising Daredevil and Elektra project out there, particularly Frank Miller’s Elektra Lives Again. He, too, would return to DC if he could direct “a true representation of the graphic novel” of Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. Snyder himself was partly inspired by The Dark Knight Returns for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Zack Snyder’s days as one of the most recognizable directors of superhero movies were marred in plenty of controversy. But as he puts it, “In the end…it could not have gone any other way.” Despite a chunk of duds, his work found support where he needed it the most, with #ReleaseTheSnyderCut proving to be one of the most powerful fan movements in movie history. And while most of us would be totally fine if he never directed anything with a cape ever again, that sort of fandom has to be recognized.

In the meantime, Snyder has Rebel Moon arriving on Netflix on December 15th.
