Michael Douglas has revealed a disturbing story from his past involving the Manson family, a house previously rented by music producer Terry Melcher, and the gruesome deaths of two of his cats. The Oscar-winning actor recounted the experience during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, explaining that he was living in a house once occupied by Melcher around the time of the infamous 1969 Manson family murders.
Douglas discusses the incident in his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, which chronicles his life and career, from growing up as the son of Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas to making films such as Wall Street, Fatal Attraction, and Romancing the Stone. In a recent interview with TheWrap, Douglas also reflected on the twists and turns of his life.
The story involving the Manson family is among the most chilling revelations.
Michael Douglas recalls the Manson family incident on Joe Rogan’s podcast
During his conversation with Rogan, Douglas explained that Charles Manson had become angry with music producer Terry Melcher, who had previously lived in the house Douglas later rented. Manson reportedly believed Melcher was still living at the property when the murders took place in August 1969. Douglas described noticing a van parked outside the house before discovering the remains of two cats belonging to his then-partner, actress Brenda Vaccaro.
Here is Douglas’s account of how the situation unfolded:
“I had a run-in with the Manson family.”
Rogan asked, “Did you really?”
Douglas continued: “Yeah, we talked about it in the book. The Manson family, when those terrible murders happened, was actually looking for a guy named Terry Melcher. Terry Melcher was Doris Day’s son and he was a rock and roll producer, and Charlie Manson was a musician and he believed he had some talent, and the girls sometimes would be used by him to have fun or something like that to make it happen. Anyway, he was pissed off at Melcher and he thought he was living in the house where Sharon Tate and the others were. I was living in the house at the time that Terry Melcher had been living, and he left. I rented the house. I was with an actress named Brenda Vaccaro early in my life—she did a movie called Midnight Cowboy—and we were there.”
He then recalled the discovery that made the experience horrifying: “And we noticed this van used to be parked outside the house in LA. And one day she had two Abyssinian cats, two beautiful Abyssinian cats. And I went out one day in the patio in the back and I found this pile of fur in a pile. And then I followed it and then I saw a cat’s leg. And then basically these guys had dismembered her two cats all the way across the yard.”
Douglas said he contacted the police about what had happened. According to his recollection, investigators connected the incident to the Manson murders shortly afterward and warned him to take precautions. “I remember talking to the police, you know, about what was going on. And then right after that, the Manson murders happened and they tied it together. I remember them coming into the house and saying, ‘Okay, well look, you got to get a gun.’ Which I did not. But he said, ‘If they come up, you know, make sure you drag them across your front door so they’re in your house.’”
Rogan reacted to the advice Douglas said he received from police: “What great advice. Before you kill them, you got to bring them inside.”
Douglas replied: “Yeah. Exactly. Exactly.”
Why was the Manson family looking for Terry Melcher?
Terry Melcher was a record producer and the son of actress and singer Doris Day. He had previously rented the Los Angeles property that later became the site of the murders of actress Sharon Tate and four other people in August 1969. Charles Manson, who sought a career in music, had connections to Melcher through the Los Angeles music scene. Manson reportedly became resentful after his hopes for a recording opportunity failed to materialize. Melcher had moved out of the house before the murders, and Douglas says he subsequently rented the property with Vaccaro.
The killings were carried out by members of Manson’s group, whose crimes became among the most notorious in American history.
As TheWrap noted in its interview, Douglas also recalled having his hair cut by Jay Sebring for his first Hollywood movie, with Sharon Tate present at the salon. Sebring and Tate were later among the victims of the Manson family.
