It was announced last week that production on The Batman Part II had been paused so director Matt Reeves could attend to a serious family matter. Shooting is now set to resume, but with Steven Soderbergh stepping in to help finish The Batman sequel.

Steven Soderbergh on The Batman Part II

According to Deadline, Soderbergh has been a longtime fan of Reeves and offered to help with the film. Reeves won’t be on set, but the two will work together and remain in communication until production is complete. When Reeves is ready to come back, he’ll take over post-production duties. Soderbergh will continue the shoot in London, while Reeves will operate out of Los Angeles. It’s said the production was about two-thirds done before the pause.

“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent,” Soderbergh said in a statement. “The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.“

The studio added, “As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2. Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film.“

Gotham Meets The Godfather

Before the pause, excitement for the sequel was already reaching a fever pitch, partly thanks to Sebastian Stan, who teased that Reeves’ vision reminded him of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather: Part II.

“What I’ll say is this: there’s no way people will fully grasp how this movie is until they see it,” Stan said. “I go to set sometimes and I look around and I’m like, I think we’re making f***ing ‘The Godfather Part Two.’ I feel that highly about it. Matt has spent three years working on it. There’s a lot of speculation about these roles, about what this movie is, but I think it’s going to be a good payoff — it’s really grounded and real, and that’s what I loved about it. You want to tease it a little, but we still have a long time.“

The Batman Part II is still slated to open in theaters on February 18, 2028.
