Joss Whedon says Ultron will be "everything a robot never is" in Avengers 2

Apr. 24, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

Director Joss Whedon was recently interviewed by Empire, where he talked a little about the titular villain appearing in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, and commented on how each new character plays an important part in his film.

Whedon starts by saying the new characters in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON like Baron Von Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann), Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) serve a purpose, and are necessary for the story he is trying to tell.

I fiercely dislike the idea of just throwing in more people for the sake of doing that. But last time I had all of Earth's Mightiest Heroes versus one British character actor, and I needed more conflict.

The director continues by saying he's having a lot of fun with James Spader's Ultron.

I'm having a blast with Ultron. He's not a creature of logic - he's a robot who's genuinely disturbed. We're finding out what makes him menacing and at the same time endearing and funny and strange and unexpected, and everything a robot never is.

Whedon also says he has enjoyed filming AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON in the U.K.

The number of different looks and textures and moods we're getting from the British locations is stupid awesome. because this, palette-wise, is very different. I'm trying to make a different film. Because why would you make one movie twice? That seems weird.

Production is currently underway on AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, and I'm sure we'll be hearing plenty more from Joss Whedon as he continues working on the final Phase Two film for Marvel.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON also stars Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Bettany and Samuel L. Jackson, and will be in theaters on May 1st, 2015.

I'm not a comic reader, but I want to know if Ultron creates some type of robot army or something. Or would that be a spoiler? It just seems odd to have so many heroes fighting 1 robot. In the first movie you also had the aliens in addition to Loki.

This description interests me: "He's not a creature of logic - he's a robot who's genuinely disturbed." That just sounds awesome. Logic, villains who are all adept at logic, kinda bores me. I'm ready for an all out crazy bad guy. So yeah, I'm intrigued.

Thats sorta weird. Because usually villains are illogical and let emotion or the idea of personal gain cloud what is logical while robots are more logical because they dont strive on emotion. Just cold and calculating.

"Everything a robot never is" - that pretty much sums up Ultron.

more characters

i like that Whedon doesnt want to throw in characters for the sake of having a bigger movie. But why not utilize character he already has? They never did explain why War Machine wasn't in The Avengers. It'll be harder to explain his absence with a global action movie like Avengers 2. Plus theres now The Falcon who is partners with Captain America. Why would Captain be there but not The Falcon? I want a real answer in this movie.

Thank you. I've been saying this for the last two years. Even after IRON MAN 3 came out, they still didn't explain WAR MACHINES absence. Even while WAR MACHINE himself is mentioning "THE EVENTS OF NEW YORK", does not explain why he wasn't present. They also don't explain HAWKEYE'S absence in CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 or even mention him, and he's a SHIELD agent. And like you said, now they will have to explain FALCON'S absence.

War Machine will appear in this movie and his absence from the Avengers was covered in Iron Man 3 when Rhodey explained he was off doing covert missions - as for the Falcon, I wouldn't say he's partnering Cap but I wouldn't expect to see him in the movie at this stage.

I really think this is going to be THE sequel of all sequels or at least when it comes to comic book films.

But is that silver robot head in the pictures what Ultron is going to look like or is that just something to use for production, because that doesn't look like Ultron at all and that would suck.

I'm sure it'll look much different in the final film.

That's just so people know where to look when they're acting in green screen. It probably is intentionally different than the final version, knowing that these production photos get leaked/distributed.

It probably is a basis of what Ultron would look like. I'm sure they will add CGI to his appearance and facial expressions.
