Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: There and Back Again gets a new official title

04.24.2014

We heard rumors that THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN, the third part of director Peter Jackson's trilogy, would potentially be getting a new title and today that rumor has become fact. Jackson issued a statement via Facebook that the new official title for the film is THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF FIVE ARMIES, which gives a bit more heft for a finale.

From Jackson:

Inside Information...

Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo's own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we've gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the "Desolation of Smaug".

When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.

And so: "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" it is.

As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies.

Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you. It’s been a nice quiet time for us—Jabez and I happily editing away in a dark cave in Wellington—but those halcyon days are quickly coming to an end. It will soon be time to step into the light. Expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months.

And there’s also The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Cut, which we’re in the process of finishing, with over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore.

It’ll be a fun year!

It seems to me that folks either love or hate THE HOBBIT trilogy so far. I've heard all the complaints and all the praise, both of which are plentiful. Personally, I love the trilogy thus far and find the movies a lot of fun to revisit. In terms of the title change, I don't think it makes a huge difference other than to really sell a really big battle. It makes sense, I suppose.

What do you think? Does the title make a difference to you?

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF FIVE ARMIES hits theaters on December 17, 2014.

I don't like it. I think if it had really been a decision to stay true to what the movie was about they would have gone with "Battle of Five Armies" at least a year ago, when they'd already filmed and cut the, you know, movie. Why wait?. I think this is making it sound more badass pure and simple, which hey, is a decision I can understand. But don't try to pretend you're staying true to Tolkien's vision and/or suddenly realizing that There and Back Again isn't a good fit for your movie.

Now that I think about it desolation of smaug should've been the title of the finale film. Cause while I'm sure they kill him I'm willing to bet he'll fuck shit up before they do. The titles should've gone:

The hobbit: an unexpected journey
The hobbit: the burglar and the arcenstone
The hobbit: the desolation of smaug

Yeah, that's better :)

I think into the fire would've been better. Battle of the five armies sounds like a Segway title like attack of the clones. The last film should have a conclusive title like return of the king, revenge if the sith, etc. into the fire doesn't quite hit the nail on the head but it sounds more conclusive than what they went with.

Oh well I'm sure once I see the movie I won't care what the title is for it.

There and back again is the title of the book that Bilbo Baggins wrote about his adventures.

Frankly I'll probably like this more when someone comes out with a fan edit that stays a bit more true to the book, cuts out characters that never appeared in the book, and cuts the running time to a single 2-4 hour movie, which is what it should have been in the first place given this was a slim 200 page children's book.

Sounds good to me.

Hey, I love what Peter Jackson has done with these films and if he feels like a new title is more fitting, s be it. Plus, he said There And Back Again would be the title of the entire extended trilogy box-set, which makes a lot more sense if you think about it.

I like it.

Makes it seem a more epic battle to come.
At least it doesn't have "RISING" in the title, that's been fucking dragged on enough. Electric Boogaloo would have been the alternate, lol

That's not better at all... The Battle of Five Armies just feels so much more generic.

Makes sense to me. Seems like they are making the change for creative reasons. There and back again makes it sound like a trip to the park with Mary Poppins and is a little bit misleading considering what is about to happen. I am also glad they made three films, even so sequences like the visit to Beorn was short, and the long trudge through Mirkwood it seemed like it had barely started. Plus these will be the last films we see from Middle Earth.

The Hobbit: Beyond Cyberspace or The Hobbit: Cruise Control would've been way more better subtitles. There's my weekend ruined!

On the fence about the title

There and back again feels more poetic . It's like changing the title of Return Of the King to "The Battle at the pelennor fields".
But if the movie is good , I guess the title doesn't matter

Yeah, this is pretty awful. It misses the entire point of the book, so I guess in that way it's at least staying consistent with the rest of the trilogy. There's a reason Tolkien had Bilbo get knocked unconscious in the book and completely miss the entire battle...because the battle wasn't the focus at all. Bilbo was the focus. "There and Back Again" perfectly sums up Bilbo's entire journey, hence why that's the alternate title of the book.

Can anyone guarantee that the movie won't

Can anyone guarantee that the movie won't completely revolve around The Battle of 5 Armies or the seige on Dol Guldur? Or that Smaug won't end up playing a huge part in either one of those, even though he really shouldn't? No surprise that Jackson misses yet another crucial aspect completely.

And the original Hobbit soundtrack won't be called "The Original Soundtrack Album" but will be "The Ultimate Greatest Hits".

The New title seems fitting, now that the Final film will pretty much be all about the battle. I have to say that i dont mind the book is being cut and stretched into three movies. Even if it is for the wrong reasons, I just love to revisit middle Earth as much as i Can! and although i was somewhat dissapointed by the quality of the movies, I still enjoyed them a Great deal. It will always be difficult to go up against, dare i say, the greatest fantasy trilogy of all Times. But i still believe

I still think it was a mistake to bloat this out to 3 movies. That said, this title does work better than "There And Back Again" and "Into The Fire". I expect the last one to be a fun movie. It probably won't be on par with LOTR, but it should be the best one of this trilogy at least.

Meh whatever, I'll be happy when Peter Jackson can move on from Hobbits and maybe do something I'm more interested in again like his earlier horror comedies.

Wait?

They're putting "as Professor Tolkien intended" in the same sentence as "box-set of all three movies?"

I don't mind the title change. All I care about is the final film of this trilogy being great and ending the trilogy on a high note.
