Thor is now the goddess of thunder

Jul. 15, 2014by: Sean Wist

Yesterday, Marvel teased that it would be announcing something "thundering" on The View. Now, I'm no Robert Langdon, but if I was a betting man I would say that announcement would have something to do with Thor.

Here's the original Tweet:

So what's the big scoop? While many suggested that perhaps a third Thor film might be in the works, evidently this news falls on the side of comic canon: Thor will now be portrayed by a woman. The mighty hammer, Mjolnir, will find that the original Thor is no longer worthy of carrying it. Unlike the first THOR film, this will not be a temporary ordeal, nor will the female Thor be "just a substitute". She is the real deal.

In series-writer Jason Aaron's words:

This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But its unlike any Thor weve ever seen before.

I certainly have no qualms about Thor being portrayed by a woman. All I ask of any story is to just make it compelling. I imagine that this change-up with her taking over, as well as her interactions with any other heroes or villains, will pave the way for many interesting stories. Given this information, I wonder if this is the direction they'll be looking to take in the cinematic Marvel-verse once Chris Hemsworth decides to hang up his Thor boots. Frankly, I would totally be down for that!

The new comic series, showcasing how female Thor came to be, will hit this October.

Yeah, right. how many times have you guys been recycling the same character over and over again through the years? Death is a joke in the comic universe. So is this so-called character change. All age old heroes go back to their age old selves. batman will always be bruce wayne, spider-man will always be peter parker, captain america will always be steve

The real Thor will obviously be back by the time Avengers 2 drops, so will Steve Rogers as Captain America; as is standard Marvel practice to return to "normal" once a movie comes out.
I am pretty tired of characters switching gender as a way of "shaking things up" instead of simply writing great stories (See Captain Marvel, Robin, Jenny Olsen, Black Panther, Speedy, Dr. Fate, Loki, Ultimate Vision, etc.).

People...people

i've read the story about this. this "thor" isn't thor odinson, it's someone else that was chosen worthy by the hammer to have the power of thor. apparently, thor odinson became unworthy for some reason. and this is has nothing to with cinematic universe...this "thor" is from earth 616.

According to what I've been reading this will be an all new character. Thor Odinson will still be Thor Odinson. As I've read only the current Thor will know who the new Thor is. I guess we'll just have to wait until October to find out.

So do any of you that are complaining about the character swap actually READ the current Thor books? Not saying that I do. Just trying to get a baseline on the rage that's on display.

It won't last. Despite all the big talk, the original Thor will be back within 2 years, just like Steve Rogers was always going to go back to being Captain America, Bruce Wayne was always going to come back as Batman and Barbara was always going to go back to being Batgirl, and for that matter, no matter what they keep telling us, Peter Parker will one day replace Miles Morales, just as he eventually evicted Doctor Octopus. It's all going to happen again.

It's entirely possible this new Thor will turn out to be a great character with a decent story going for her. In which case, the real question will be what to do with/about her when the old Thor comes back. As we all know he is.

Instead of coming up with an original story for female heroines, you hijack Thor and make him a woman. And this is supposed to make women feel included?

It's not like they're rewriting the origin. It seems the male Thor got a little douchey and is no longer fit to wield Mjolnir and fem-Thor was there to pick up the slack by being worthy of the power. Seems like an inclusionary story to me.

But the fact is, this is a proven, effective marketing method. Branding is very important in this medium. A new character is always better received when there's a tie to an exist, popular character. It's an annoying trend sometimes (because it creates homogeneity), but that doesn't change the facts.

Stupid

Thor is a male figure out of Norse mythology. It's enough of a stretch that he becomes a version of the original myth in a comic. Changing the gender to really ruin the last thread of connection to the legend is stupid - no other word for it. Boo Marvel.
Maybe they don't teach mythology of different cultures in school anymore and nobody will notice.

Yeah, as stated, no big deal here. Comics are revamped all the time. Characters get written off only to come back later, a lead character is replaced with someone else, name changes, etc.

Wow they have really run out of ideas haven't they. The comic universe is just like a big soap opera, and a bad one at that. But I agree this is nothing more than a buy our comics ploy, and later they will have another ploy when then kill her off, and use her soul to resurrect Wolverine and the real Thor comes back out of stasis, or Florida or where ever then put him.

heh

Two things:
1: Nothing in comics is forever. They will bring it back to the original Thor eventually its more a matter of how long it takes.
2: At least Thor is a hero that this makes sense for. His power comes from the hammer and this is not the first time he's lost it. I seem to recall there being some earthing that got the hammer for a period of time. I'm pretty sure its that Thor that's around for things like Infinity Gauntlet.

This sounds awesome. Heroes are re-vamped all the time, I think it's cool they decided to re-vamp Thor and at the same time introduce a more mainstream female superhero. The comics industry has certainly been suffering from a lack of female heroines.

This coupled with the fact that Captain America is going to be someone new as well leads me to believe that they are preparing for the actors to not renew their contracts for solo films after three arcs are up. So by having someone new in the mantle of Captain America, Thor (perhaps Iron Man eventually) they'll have no problems with continuing the MCU using different characters to portray the superheroes. That's my two cents, because I doubt Dr. Strange, Ant-Man, and Black Panther will be big enough of a draw to get audiences out to Marvel films in the future.

Honestly character get replaced in comic all the time, it's not even the first time Thor was replaced in the comics, hell it's not the first time Thor was a woman(Earth X). And it certainly won't be the last. Also I'm willing to bet this has no effect on the movies what-so-ever. So let Marvel try something new and see if it works.

I get the feeling we're on the verge of another 'Heroes Reborn' type situation with marvel; new Thor, new cap, wolverine dying, lots of unnecessary PR stunts. If Thor were still Donald Blake this could be an interesting story, but Thor IS Thor these days. There are plenty of strong females in the marvel U, just write them strong stories, don't commandeer other popular characters.

Dumb

This is obviously Marvel's way of protecting their movie franchise when Chris Hemsworth decides to call it quits. Like the news of the New Captain America. Bet they go after Ronda Rousey to play this role. I know they are killing Wolverine off in September, but if he comes back as a butch, hairy, female I am giving up on Marvel

How exactly is this a bad thing?

Maybe I'm ignorant, but if this female Thor has all the characteristics of the traditional Thor, and the only major difference is that she happens to be a woman...then what the hell kind of difference does it make? Fanboys are naturally against any kind of change, I get that, but if this opens the door to even more female superheroes (either completely new, or female versions of what we already have) that also happen to be well-written, strong, and interesting, then how can it possibly be a bad

There can be attractive tough girls, they are out there. There are men that are supposed to be tough too, but can't throw a punch. I'm not just bAging on women here, but to get back on topic, Marvel needs to come up,with good ideas for their heroes, not just change the gender or race. We need a Frank Miller to reinvent these characters like he did Batman in the '80s. My opinion only, but this is a terrible idea.

"emasculate young men"?? "not every action hero has to be a woman"??? For Christ's sake. Basically EVERY major superhero is a male. It's been that way for DECADES. You seriously think young men are going to become "emasculated" because ONE of their favorite male heroes is becoming a woman?? I mean, come on! Stop trying to portray men as victims of society at large...we're not. If anything, women are being victimized because they're so under-represented in not only comics, but basically the

If anything, women are being victimized because they're so under-represented in not only comics, but basically the majority of things in everyday life. EVERYTHING is tailored for our tastes. It's way past time someone decided to do something for women as well.

It sounds like your criteria of a good character is if they're "tough" and able to kick your ass. Yeah...you're missing quite a few important qualities that actually make up strong characters. And if this new female Thor has those qualities, then this is a fantastic idea. Your whole mindset and mentality is, quite frankly, sickening.

Whatever man, didn't come here to fight. My opinion only. Guess I come from a different time and ideology, which is ok. I like strong characters, as long as they are convincing. I got a little off track with my post, but I just don't see this as being a good idea.

I came at you a little too headstrong and I definitely regret and apologize for not exactly being as non-confrontational as I would like, but my point stands. I'm passionate about this particular subject and my major pet peeve is this mentality that us males have that we're somehow being threatened or even persecuted by ANY attempt to promote equality for anyone, let it be females or different ethnic groups or what have you.

It's such a destructive way of thinking, because the reality is

It's such a destructive way of thinking, because the reality is that everything is served to us males on a platter. We still have to work hard to get to where we are in life, of course, but it's nothing compared to what women go through every single day. And complaining about ONE superhero being temporarily changed into a woman is just so...wrong, IMO. We're in the 21st century, and we still have to have conversations about this?

It's discouraging. If this new Thor is EXACTLY like the traditional male one, except this one happens to have female body parts...then what's the difference? Why is there an uproar over this? If this brings new female readers into comics and comic book movies, how can that possibly be a bad idea?

No worries. Passion is good, it gets stuff done.
Hey, did we just have an intelligent Internet conversation? Wow...

Hmmmm, considering that a movies success drives comic sales and not the other way around.

This could backfire. Thor's comic sales have increased since the Chris Hemsworth movies have been coming out, there has been a lot of female interest in comic books since the marvel movies have been coming out. I hope this series continues to do well. But I think by the time the new Thor movie comes out in 2 years it will revert back to Male Thor.

A new Captain America and now a new Thor? What's next, Black Panther being Asian?

@Ryan - I think its just for the comics. Remember not too long ago Otto Octavius was Spiderman.

These things happen - even though the Marvel universe movies are good, the comics are ALL OVER THE PLACE. Marvel has done some really odd stuff with their characters - may be good, may be bad who knows.

OK thanks. I thought it is interesting. I've never actually read a comic, so this title messed with me. But I do think it's pretty cool. Doesn't matter to me what gender at all. I'm sure female Thor is a total babe.

Something like this happened in the Earth X series. Loki manipulated Odin into turning Thor into a woman as punishment for his misogyny or something or other. Anyways, Jason Aaron has pretty much been hitting it out of the park with Thor's title since he started. I'll trust him with this weird turn of events

What?

So what does this mean. When does this happen? Avengers 2 will have a woman Thor? I think not.
