Venom will reportedly be an R-rated kickoff to a Marvel universe at Sony

03.27.2017

Not long ago we got word that Venom would finally be making his way to the big screen with Sony planning for an October 5, 2018 release. That’s not very far off considering the size of a project like that, plus with casting and a director needed to be found. But apparently Sony already has it’s ducks in a row, tone wise at least, as a new report claims the studio knows exactly where the movie is going to go.

Collider got a scoop claiming Sony wants the upcoming Venom movie to be rated R, and it will kick off their own Marvel movie universe with what characters they have the rights to. The report notes that this could change when a director is found, but the tip does make sense given how ALIEN: COVENANT writer Dante Harper has been hired to write the script.

This news of a greater Marvel universe at Sony is given more credence considering they hired THOR: RAGNAROK writer Chris Yost to write a Black Cat and Silver Sable movie. Most of these characters are hinged on the presence of Spider-Man, who is currently placed in the main MCU with the other Avengers, so how that will all work out is anyone’s guess as these two universes will have zero connection to each other.

Of course this is just early news, and like the report said any of this can change and adapt as filming gets underway. However, given the popularity of recent R-rated superhero movies like LOGAN and DEADPOOL, and Venom’s nature in the comics, an R outing is not too farfetched. Hiring of Harper means Sony is probably looking for some sort of horror angle, so maybe something with “Venom meets ALIEN” is in the works. That would be crazy. But good crazy? No clue.

VENOM is aiming for October 5, 2018.

They have the rights to Spider-Man, so maybe they are planning an R-rated Spider-Man movie. Independent of the MCU

Why on earth would they do that? To intentionally confuse auduences?

Most stupid comment online... There will never be an R rated Spidey movie and never a need for one either.

Naaa… there is every need for one. If they’re serious about Venom.

Apparently Sony hasn't learned from their mistakes from previous superheroes films they have done. They probably never will.

Let's not forget, before Deadpool the character everyone clamored for seeing an R rated version of was Punisher. And we eventually got one, but it was forgotten immediately because the story sucked. Nobody's seeing R rated movies BECAUSE they're R. They're seeing them because they're really good and HAPPEN to be R

This sounds awful. Was really looking forward to seeing how Marvel was going to portray Venom, and Carnage in their MCU.

And I don't mind the rating being R; I just mind the stupidity of Sony making a Venom film without having any association of Spider Man in it, and taking the away the potential of the character and storylines in the MCU because of it.

*EARLIER*

Sony Executive #1: MAN, we're making some sweet cash after sharing Spidey with Marvel! What should we do now?
Sony Executive #2: Well, I spent damn near all of it on airplane glue. Wanna party and think of how to further undermine our progress as a studio?

Sony won't understand why R rated movies work

They will use an R as a gimmick attached to a shitty script. Logan and Deadpool worked off great scripts that would have made good movies no matter the rating. I feel like Sony is going to jump on, and ruin the bandwagon. We are about to get a Venom movie without Spiderman or any non Marvel Studio characters so who will he fight? More venoms. No joke, they are going to have Venom fighting other goop monsters.

Venom doesn't work unless you do black suit Spiderman first. This is dumb.

Sony & Marvel's deal, apparently:

Sony "Fine, we'll let you put out the Spider-Man fire, if you let us start these five OTHER fires instead!"

Good

I hope they just continue to make R rated superhero flicks. But only if it deserves and R. Like you won't make Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Spiderman R I can't really see that ever happening. It would be different to see but be to much I think.

Not surprising, Hollywood studios rarely work & play well with others.
Sony still owns Spider-Man and could ultimately take him for their own films again.

too many questions

So does that mean we cant have Venom in the Marvel Universe now? Is he restricted to Sony only, and if so, why have a Venom movie with no Spiderman? Need more info.

Eh....screw Spiderman. How many times do we have to watch this ridiculous story over and over and over. I didn't even watch the last one because I saw a teaser for it and decided it sucked.
