Tomb Raider Reboot

The Tomb Raider series has had a rough couple of years. It looks like it is rebounding nicely though with the new game getting great reviews and excitement seems to be high. So what better time to get an update on the film reboot?

Variety has an article that primarily covers what inspired the people at Crystal Dynamics while they were working on the reboot of the iconic character. It shouldn’t surprise you that since the game is a reboot that they took a look at certain films like BATMAN BEGINS and CASINO ROYALE to see what worked for them.

As far as plans for the movie reboot, Crystal Dynamics is working with GK Films on the project as opposed to just selling the movie rights and having no input. This is very important according to Darrell Gallagher, who is the head of studio at Crystal Dynamics:

They are working from this new take that we’ve given them. It’s a good partnership. We’re seeing the challenges through the same lens.

He also goes on to say that the film would follow the younger Lara Croft that has been established in the new game:

It was important for both of us to have a cohesive version of the franchise. We didn’t want to see a film version that was a continuation of the old Tomb Raider films.

Regardless of how you feel about the two TOMB RAIDER films, both made a bunch of money (even if the second one was a bit of a disappointment) and with the hype as high as it is for the new game, right now is the best time to get this reboot going. I wonder if the film will be as graphic as the video game reboot, which is the first in the series to receive a “Mature” rating. The most obvious question though: who will play Lara Croft?

In case you were wondering, the new Tomb Raider game is out today and even Conan O’Brien loves it.
