1492 Pictures bringing Graveyard Book and Carpe Demon to big screen

Earlier I told you about an unlikely collaboration between Adam Green and Chris Columbus’ 1492 Pictures that would be bringing a monster-hunting adventure movie to the big screen. Well, there’s more to the story, but I just figured I’d give Green his own article because, hell, the guy’s earned a little more time in the spotlight.

Columbus happens to be preparing two more PG-13 horror flicks, both of which seem like they’re along the same lines as Green’s KILLER PIZZA. The first is Neil Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book”, which has been traveling a long road to get to the big screen (we last wrote about it in January). Neil Jordan is attached to write and direct, as he has been for some time.

Here’s what THE GRAVEYARD BOOK is all about: A family is stabbed to death by “a man named Jack” –the sole survivor of the attack–an 18-month-old baby–escapes his crib and his house, and toddles to a nearby graveyard. Quickly recognizing that the baby is orphaned, the graveyard’s ghostly residents adopt him, name him Nobody (“Bod”), and allow him to live in their tomb.

Pretty morbid stuff. The other project on 1492’s docket is an adaptation of the book “Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom”, and it sounds like a more lighthearted affair. Read on for the synopsis of the book.

Lots of women put their careers aside once the kids come along. Kate Connor, for instance, hasn’t hunted a demon in ages. That must be why she missed the one wandering through the pet food aisle of the San Diablo Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, he managed to catch her attention an hour later-when he crashed into the Connor house, intent on killing her. Now Kate has to clean up the mess in her kitchen, dispose of a dead demon, and pull together a dinner party that will get her husband elected to County Attorney-all without arousing her family’s suspicion. Worse yet, it seems the dead demon didn’t come alone…It’s time for Kate Connor to go back to work.

Columbus is penning the screenplay for “Demon”; earlier drafts were tackled by Kevin & Dan Hageman and Michael Dougherty & Dan Harris (X2, SUPERMAN RETURNS).

South Korean media company CJ Entertainment will be co-financing the films.
