A while back, the screenplay for SHIVER (written by Robert Weinbach who also produced the flick) wound up on my lap. I read it and didn’t think much of it. Pedestrian, cliched, unispired…basically a poor man’s version of THE WATCHER; which was no great shakes on its end. Don’t get me wrong there was “something” there; but the script needed a hefty once over if ya ask me.
Now I have no idea if re-writes were done on the thing before they shot it; but hey I’ll find out when the picture has its planned world premiere at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival in September. Yup director JULIAN RICHARDS has just completed principal photography on his debut Hollywood feature film. SHIVER was shot on location in Los Angeles, California and Portland, Oregon and it stars the lovely Danielle Harris (Halloween), John Jarratt (Wolf Creek), Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers) and Rae Dawn Chong (Commando).
What is it about? It tells the heart warming tale of: A young secretary stalked by a relentless serial killer, finds the courage to fight back. On a bad night in L.A., shy and timid Wendy Alden survives a terrifying encounter with a serial killer nicknamed the Gryphon. But the Gryphon isn’t through with Wendy. His insane obsession drives him to strike at her again and again … To survive, Wendy must discover an inner strength she never suspected she possessed.
Richards had this to say about the project: “Fans of Hitchcock, Halloween and Silence Of The Lambs will enjoy SHIVER. I set out to thoroughly torture the heroine whilst having fun with a killer that just won’t take no for an answer”.
Post production on SHIVER is scheduled to be done in May of 2011. Although I have little faith in the draft of the script I read, I do have faith in Richards as director. So it can go either way. Lets see how this one turns out next year!
Miss Harris, always a sight to behold!
